History

The Council of Shadows was a clandestine organization of high-ranking Catholic Church officials who operated in total secrecy, hidden even from the knowledge of the official Vatican hierarchy. Originating as a defensive cabal within the Church's inner circles, the group dedicated itself to the singular mission of identifying and destroying the Holy Grail, which they believed contained irrefutable evidence of Jesus Christ’s marriage to Mary Magdalene and the subsequent survival of his bloodline. Throughout its early history, the Council remained underground because its members faced certain excommunication if their unsanctioned activities were ever brought to light by the Holy See. Early in its history, the group maintained its secrecy not just to hide from the public, but to avoid excommunication, as their unsanctioned activities and 'shadow' status were strictly forbidden by the Holy See. Before the film's timeline begins, the Council had remained largely dormant or focused on quiet suppression until modern advancements, particularly in DNA identification, created a new sense of urgency regarding the discovery of Magdalene’s tomb.

Bishop Aringarosa was involved in the Council of Shadows plot to eliminate the Holy Grail after being instigated on this path by the shadowy figure known as The Teacher.

Overview

In appearance, the Council of Shadows functioned as a deep-state cabal within the Catholic Church, comprised of influential prelates and advisors who operated with complete autonomy from the official Vatican administration. Historically, the Council’s purpose was to safeguard the Church's doctrinal foundation by identifying and neutralizing "threats" to the divinity of Christ—specifically the physical evidence of his marriage to Mary Magdalene.

Members of the Council feature as high-ranking members of the Catholic Church who operated underground and with the Vatican unaware of their existence. Their purpose was to seek out and destroy the Holy Grail that contained the only evidence of Jesus Christ's marriage to Mary Magdalene as well as the survival of his descendants. The secrecy of the group helped maintain its ability to operate as the revelation of its existence would lead to all its members being excommunicated by the Vatican.
