Biography
Cordyceps Jones
Cordyceps Jones accumulated massive wealth through illegitimate cosmic operations and ran an off-world banking setup where only his unique brain waves could access the funds. When Rocket Raccoon needed to clear a massive bounty placed on him by the Technet mercenary group, Rocket teamed up with Deadpool to orchestrate a high-stakes heist directly targeting Jones's wealth. Deadpool initiated a physical confrontation, killed Jones’s current organic host body, and deliberately inhaled the resulting cloud of fungal spores into his own system. Because of Deadpool's hyper-advanced mutant healing factor and unique physiology, Jones was entirely unable to take mental control of his body, allowing Deadpool and Rocket to systematically clean out Jones's personal account at Shrooman's Savings & Loam. Once the financial extraction concluded, Deadpool forcibly vomited the remaining spores out into a literal gutter. As Jones's physical form began washing away down the drain, he explicitly swore a vow of vengeance against both Rocket and Deadpool. (Rocket v1 #4)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Cordyceps Jones was a male parasitic fungal spore whose true form consisted of a collective, microscopic cluster of glowing biological mold and root-like structures. In his displayed state, his true fungal form grew directly inside and possessed the organic body of a host creature. While possessing a host, his physical presence manifested through the biological alteration of the host's nervous system and cells rather than standard clothes or armor. As his consciousness and actual self existed as an entire colony of airborne spores rather than a single humanoid body, his visible appearance changed entirely depending on the unique physical structure of the victim he chose to compromise and control at that exact moment. (Rocket v1 #4)
Powers and abilities
Cordyceps Jones belonged to a parasitic fungal spore race, which naturally granted him the biological trait of host possession and systemic cellular replacement. His physiology allowed him to be inhaled into the lungs of a target victim, where he immediately overrode their consciousness and gained total mechanical control over their body. He possessed distinct, localized brain waves that functioned as an un-replicable biometric key, which he used to lock and access his off-world financial accounts. He did not possess direct superhuman physical strength or conventional energy manipulation, and he was completely unable to fully possess or overwrite the mind of any host body that possessed an active, advanced cellular healing factor. His primary capabilities relied on his high mental intellect, strategic criminal acumen, and his ability to establish massive intergalactic gambling operations. (Rocket v1 #4)
