History

The Chiss were a race of blue-skinned humanoids from the galaxy far, far away that lived on their home world of Csilla in the Unknown Regions.

On a world in Wild Space, an Imperial scouting party led by Colonel Mosh Barris and Captain Voss Parck discovered a series of small huts. While investigating the site, the scouting party was ambushed by a mysterious assailant who utilized the environment and Guerilla tactics to kill five Imperial Navy troopers and one stormtrooper. The encounter reached its climax when the 'exiled' castaway to successfully stow away aboard their transport and followed them back to the Venator-class Star Destroyer Strikefast. Once the hangar bay lights were dimmed to draw him out, the Chiss emerged from the shadows, revealing a striking appearance: blue skin, shimmering blue-black hair, and glowing red eyes. For most of the crew, he was a creature of myth, but for Eli Vanto, a cadet from the Wild Space world of Lysatra, the figure was instantly recognizable as the legendary Chiss of his homeworld's folklore. Following the initial encounter on the Strikefast, the Chiss warrior was transported to Coruscant, where he stood before Emperor Palpatine and offered his tactical genius as a "resource" rather than a mere gift. To the Emperor’s intrigue, the blue-skinned stranger revealed he had once fought alongside Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, a connection that secured his place within the Imperial military despite the regime's rampant xenophobia. Thrawn was promptly enrolled in the Royal Imperial Academy alongside his reluctant translator, Eli Vanto, where both men endured systemic bullying and racial slurs from wealthy Core World cadets and a dismissive Commandant. Throughout this three-month orientation, Thrawn maintained a calculated silence, allowing his rivals to overstep before systematically dismantling their social and academic standing through superior intellect. Upon graduating as a lieutenant, Thrawn began a meteoric and controversial ascent through the Imperial Navy, proving his lethality in campaigns against pirates and smugglers while secretly nurturing his primary objective: securing an alliance between the Galactic Empire and the Chiss Ascendancy against the encroaching darkness of the Unknown Regions.

Overview

In appearance, the Chiss were a race of blue-skinned humanoids that had distinctive red eyes.

Chiss are taught to approach their areas of specialization with intense focus and harsh logic, driving Chiss culture to suppress emotion and avoid hasty emotions such as anger, fear and revenge. From this emotional coolness, and despite a socialist economic model, Chiss culture stresses individual responsibility and self-discipline. While this might seem to make them ideal Jedi for their emotional restraint and responsibility, very few force-users have ever been reported in their culture.

Within Chiss society, children matured very quickly, never truly having an adolescent period before becoming adults.

Sky-walkers (Chiss: ozyly-esehembo) were Force-sensitive Chiss navigators who helped the Chiss Ascendancy navigate the dangerous hyperspace conditions present in the Ascendancy's native Unknown Regions of the galaxy. Sky-walkers served the Ascendancy's military and diplomatic corps in an organization known as the sky-walker corps, and later the seekers program.

The concept of open aggression was not seen as utterly alien to the Chiss. They simply view it as a flawed strategy which is more likely to result in the conqueror being the conquered.

Chiss must be approached from a position of strength and respect. One must have strength, for the Chiss will deal only with those capable of keeping their promises. One must have respect, for the Chiss must believe that those promises will be kept.

The government of the Chiss Ascendancy was an oligarchy based on Nine Ruling Families, with the Chiss Syndicure and Aristocra composed of high officials from the Ruling Families and lesser but still influential Great Families. As with much of Chiss society, Chiss families were highly hierarchical. Chiss families had a hierarchy of political ranks as well as social or family ranks. Family ranks applied to all family members. Families' political hierarchies applied to those who worked in politics, policy, and public service; and by extension, those affected by the decisions of family officials. The head of a Chiss family was called the Patriarch, and did not need to be male.

The ruling class of the Chiss Ascendancy was known as the Aristocra. The supreme legislative and executive body of the Ascendancy was the Chiss Syndicure. The Chiss military consisted of the Chiss Defense Force and the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet.

The native tongue of the Chiss was Cheunh that was a complex and creative language with an intricate syntax involving compound words made from a relatively small core of primary words, and the Chiss used detailed ideograms to represent concepts and combinations of images to represent complex ideas.

They were noted for their lack of droids, or any kind of artificial intelligence.

Alternate Versions

  • In Star Wars Legends, the Chiss made their first appearance in the setting of the former Star Wars Expanded Universe. They were shown as being natives to the world of Csilla that was located in the Unknown Regions. Their government was the Chiss Ascendancy based in the Unknown Regions around their homeworld of Csilla with their military being the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force. Leadership was held among the Chiss Ruling Families consisting of Aristocra whilst defense of the individual colonies was held by the Colonial Phalanxes with the military headed by figures holding the position of Syndic. Historical speculation and genetic analysis determined that the Chiss were a human offshoot species that came to settle the planet Csilla long ago. Legend spoke of the world having once been a tropical paradise until it fell into an ice age that impacted the mindset of the species. After surviving, they came to advance until they developed space travel. Initial Chiss star-travel era involved their scientists attempting to create hyperfields over vehicles designed to carry passengers. At the same time, automated drones were launched into the Unknown Regions with specialized beacons that led to the creation of a network of navigational anchor-points. This saw the formation of their military and interstellar government where they formed a policy against pre-emptive stirkes. By this point, they came to encounter many of the hostile races that inhabited the Unknown Regions. Among these included the piratical Vaagari and even came to encounter signs of the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong. Among their notable acts was during the era of the Old Republic where they were involved in the incident that caused the loss of the Outbound Flight. During the reign of the Galactic Empire, a Chiss named Thrawn came to be recruited into the ranks of the Imperial war machine where he eventually rose to the position of Grand Admiral. He came to be dispatched to bring order to the Unknown Regions which resulted in him not being present in the time of Emperor Palpatine's demise. In this time, he would establish a splinter government consisting of Imperial and Chiss forces called the Empire of the Hand. Thrawn would later return in an attempt to topple the New Republic but was ultimately killed in the conflict. By this point, the Chiss Ascendancy responded to an incursion into their space by the Ssi-Ruuk where they repelled the invasion and even struck at the reptilian invaders homeworld.
