The Children of Ares
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Following their efforts to incite nuclear war, the Children of Ares reappeared as primary agents in a plot to transform the city of Gotham into a new seat of power for the God of War. They orchestrated the theft of ancient artifacts and utilised their divine influence to possess several of Gotham’s prominent criminals, including the Joker, Poison Ivy, and the Scarecrow, effectively turning them into vessels for their own godly essences. This possession granted the host bodies enhanced supernatural abilities and physical transformations that mirrored the siblings' true forms. During this period, they oversaw the construction of a massive, sacrificial arena within the city limits and began a ritual to merge the mortal world with the Areopagus, Ares’s divine realm. They engaged in a prolonged confrontation with Wonder Woman and Batman, utilizing illusions and the amplification of local phobias to incapacitate the city's defenders. These actions were defined by a shift from global political manipulation to a localized, ritualistic assault intended to create a permanent physical anchor for the power of Ares on Earth. Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
In appearance, Children of Ares were divine entities with monstrous, varied forms, featuring Deimos as a humanoid with a writhing, serpentine lower body and Phobos as a large, bestial creature with a grey, boar-like head, while Eris was portrayed with sharp, statue-like features and flowing hair. These beings, representing fear, dread, and strife, often wore gold armor or classical Greek robes, with their forms constantly reflecting their specific, violent domains. Their physical nature, which included unnatural, non-human features, was designed to evoke intense, involuntary panic and terror in all mortals nearby, functioning as a direct, visible representation of their roles. Furthermore, these immortal figures, whose bodies were made of divine ichor, had the ability to alter their size or shift into shadow-like shapes, demonstrating their innate power over combat and psychological terror. Notes
- The Children of Ares were created by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter where they made their first appearance in Wonder Woman v1 #2 (1942).
- There was no group known as "the Children of Ares" in any DC Comics continuity; the term has never been used as an in-story proper team name, such as "Justice League" or "Suicide Squad". However, during DC's post-Crisis continuity, the trio of Deimos, Phobos and Eris were designated as "Ares’ Children" in an illustrated encyclopaedic entry by that title in 1999's Wonder Woman Secret Files and Origins #2.
- Several years later, a similar entry titled "Children of Ares" grouped the same three characters in Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Princess, a Wonder Woman encyclopaedia published in 2003 in conjunction with DC Comics.
- Though Wonder Woman uses the phrase "children of Ares" to address the Crow Children in 2010's Wonder Woman v3 #41, she is not naming them properly but rather indicating her knowledge of their parentage and fealty.
