The Castle of the Crystal
The historic architectural anchor of the planet Thra, known as the Castle of the Crystal, served as the primary staging ground for a major planetary crisis when the three suns aligned perfectly over its apex one thousand trine ago during the first Great Conjunction. Inside the grand central laboratory, a translucent alien species known as the urSkeks gathered around the flawless, glowing heart of the planet, hoping the immense focused light energy would open a portal back to their ancestral homeworld. Instead, a critical spiritual imbalance within the participants caused the incoming stellar light to fracture violently upon hitting the crystal structure, setting off a massive environmental shockwave that cracked the great Crystal and split the urSkeks into two opposing races. The aggressive, predatory Skeksis immediately initiated a violent inner-sanctum coup, driving their peaceful counterparts, the urRu, out of the mountain passes to seize absolute ownership of the newly fortified citadel for the next millennium.
The internal supernatural landscape of the fortified palace experienced an unprecedented paradigm shift as the ruling Skeksis turned the lower subterranean levels of the castle into a sterile house of absolute biological exploitation to prolong their unnatural lifespans. The Skeksis Scientist constructed a massive, high-tech extraction array directly beneath the central crystal chamber, utilizing specialized mirrors to reflect the ambient purple light of the corrupted Crystal into a concentrated beam of agony. This beam was directly projected onto captured members of the gentle Gelfling race, violently siphoning away their vital life essence into a glowing liquid that the Skeksis Emperor and his inner circle drank to reverse their advanced physical decay. This systematic extraction program resulted in the total near-extinction of the Gelfling population, turning the ancestral castle into a paranoid, heavily guarded fortress where the screams of biological prisoners echoed through the dark stone corridors while the surrounding outer forests slowly transformed into a toxic, dying wasteland.
It was the home of the Skeksis, and the location of the Dark Crystal.
