Biography
Cancer Deathmask (Japanese: 蟹座のデスマスク, Hepburn: Kyansā no Desumasuku)
Thirteen years ago before the events of the main story, all the Gold Saints, together with the Pope, witness the arrival of the baby Athena, in front of the statue of the Goddess. Shion then reveals that the Holy War against Hades is at hand and tells the Golden Knights to prepare. Due to already advanced age, Shion decides to choose his successor among the Golden Saints. Later, Aphrodite and Death Mask talk about Saga, who had disappeared days ago. The Cancer Knight says he doesn't care about anything, saying that he would side with whoever benefits him. Shortly thereafter, Saga, having taken on the identity of Pope, accuses Aiolos of trying to kill Athena, ordering everyone to capture her. Knight of Sagittarius manages to go through most of the twelve houses, reaching the House of Cancer. Death Mask mocks Aiolos' condition, saying he has no intention of letting him pass without receiving something in return. This infuriates Aiolos, who asks how can someone with such a thought be a Knight of Athena. Death Mask ends the discussion and applies his attack, but due to Athena's powers, it is Death Mask who appears in Yomotsu Hirasaka. Without understanding, he is attacked by a horde of dead, being temporarily contained. Returning to the world of the living, Death Mask joins Aphrodite and Capricorn Shura, managing to reach Aiolos just as he was preparing to cross an old bridge to leave the Sanctuary. Death Mask begins beating the Sagittarius Knight, demanding him to surrender Athena. Aiolos is indifferent to the blows he receives, moving on. Shura manifests his Excalibur, destroying the fragile bridge. Death Mask and Aphrodite think about going down, but Shura stop them, saying with regret that Athena died along with Aiolos, but that the Goddess would revive soon.
Deathmask first appears in the Khrysos Synagein with the other Gold Saints, where he quarrels with Leo Aiolia, but they are stopped by the High Priest. Later, when two of the Giants attack the Sanctuary, he fights the Giant Blue Flame and easily defeats him. Soon after, Saga reveals his true identity and Deathmask decides to be loyal to him. After the fierce battle between Cronos and Aiolia, when Tartarus was disappearing and the people of the Titans witness the 'destruction' of their world, Death Mask appears making use of his levitation and teleportation abilities, who offers them a departure to the village and a 'choice' of life on earth instead of returning to the darkness of Tartarus. The options presented are to go to territories guarded by the Sanctuary, the Island of the Death Queen or the Island of Andromeda, those who can fight will be given black armor and those who do not like those options must face Death Mask. Deductibly this is an order given by the Gemini Saga, since the goal is none other than to cause future conflicts between the saints and the black saints
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Cancer Deathmask was a tall, muscular man with shoulder-length blue hair and piercing, contemptuous eyes. His defining feature was his Gold Cloth of Cancer, a radiant suit of golden armor adorned with ornate details resembling a crab’s shell and claws, symbolizing his zodiacal constellation. When unarmored, he was often depicted wearing simple robes or casual attire during his earthly interludes, contrasting his regal and battle-ready form as a Gold Saint. His expressions alternated between mocking amusement and cold detachment, perfectly capturing his disdainful and unpredictable nature.
In personality, Deathmask was ruthless and self-serving, concerned primarily with his own power and status within Sanctuary. Unlike other Gold Saints who embodied Athena’s ideals of justice, he reveled in his role as an executioner, showing delight in sending opponents to the Underworld. His disdain for the Bronze Saints was apparent, as he mocked their ideals and viewed their struggle as futile. Even in battle, he exuded arrogance, convinced of his superiority until Shiryu’s unyielding willpower shattered his confidence. Personality-wise, Deathmask was among the most morally ambiguous of the Gold Saints. He took immense pride in his power and believed that might defined justice, dismissing compassion and mercy as weaknesses. His twisted sense of justice led him to execute those he deemed “unworthy of life,” which brought him into direct philosophical conflict with Athena’s teachings. Despite his cruelty, Deathmask was not devoid of emotion—his eventual shame and moments of self-reflection revealed a complex man torn between pride, fear, and a buried desire for redemption. This conflict between corruption and conscience became a defining trait throughout his reincarnations.
Deathmask was a ruthlessly cruel, sadistic, and nihilistic Gold Saint who proudly guarded the Fourth House of the Sanctuary on behalf of the grand Pope. Completely discarding the traditional moral codes of chivalry and justice, he firmly believed that might dictates right and that historical definitions of justice are written entirely by the ultimate victors of war. Operating as an unchecked, cold-blooded executioner for the compromised Sanctuary leadership, he routinely slaughtered innocent civilians, women, and children during his high-stakes global assignments to eliminate perceived traitors. He viewed the physical souls of his slaughtered targets as simple trophies of his absolute supremacy, trapping their agonizing, screaming faces within the brickwork of his temple to serve as a visual warning to any intruders. His unchecked bloodlust ultimately led to a fierce ideological confrontation during the Twelve Temples crisis, where he faced the Bronze Saint Dragon Shiryū in a brutal duel to the death that challenged his dark philosophical worldview.
Powers and abilities
As a Gold Saint, Deathmask’s physiology was that of a human elevated through rigorous training and mastery of the Cosmos. His abilities included enhanced speed, strength, and durability far beyond normal humans or even lower-ranked Saints, allowing him to fight at near-light speeds. His golden Cancer Cloth granted him additional protection and amplified his Cosmos-based powers.
His powers were centered around his mastery of spiritual manipulation and death-based techniques, befitting his title as the Saint of Cancer. His signature attack, the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, allowed him to send his opponents’ souls directly to the underworld, effectively bypassing physical resistance. He could summon the faces of the dead that adorned the walls of his temple, using them to terrify and ensnare his enemies. As a Gold Saint, Deathmask possessed the ability to move at the speed of light and utilize his Seventh Sense, granting him extraordinary awareness and control over his cosmos. In later appearances, he demonstrated further refinement of his powers, combining his spectral attacks with explosive bursts of cosmic energy, marking him as one of the most fearsome Saints to bear the Gold Cloth.
Deathmask possessed an extraordinary command over the multi-dimensional fabric of space and the spiritual realm of the dead, powered by his mastery of the Seventh Sense. His primary offensive capability was the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, a terrifying spiritual technique where he concentrated his dark Cosmo into a single point on his index finger to unleash a swirling, high-velocity vortex of ghostly energy. This energy wave completely separated an opponent's soul from their physical body, dragging their spirit instantly across dimensions into the Yomotsu Hirasaka—the absolute, barren gateway to the Underworld from which no living being could escape. Furthermore, because his Cosmo was intimately attuned to this spiritual transition zone, Deathmask could teleport freely between the realm of the living and the gates of Hell, allowing him to stalk his targets across dimensions and attack their vulnerable, incorporeal souls with complete impunity.
Notes
- Cancer Deathmask was created by Masami Kurumada where he featured in the setting of the Saint Seiya universe.
- Masami Kurumada derived Deathmask's abilities from the Japanese and Chinese folklore related to the Cancer constellation. The Cancer Constellation contains the Beehive Cluster, also known as Praesepe, which is considered in those folklores as the entrance to the realm of the dead. Hence Deathmask's abilities to freely traverse that realm.
- Also, Kurumada derived the motif of Deathmask's abilities of traversing the realm of the dead from Japanese superstition. The Kyokaikyū Temple, which Deathmask guarded, was the fourth temple. In Japanese language, the word for four, Shi, is homophonic to the word for death, also Shi. Thus, the Japanese have long considered the number four as a bad omen and relate it to death.
