Biography
Miguel Jose Barragan
Raised in the small Mexican village called 'El Chilar', Miguel Jose Barragan had grown up in a loving and supportive community, and found acceptance as an openly gay teenager. When Miguel manifested the meta-human ability to create psionic energy constructs, the extroverted idealist sought out Red Robin in an attempt to become a full-fledged superhero. Unlike many young heroes who viewed their powers as a traumatic curse, Miguel embraced his gifts with immense joy, viewing them as a divine sign to venture out into the world and achieve greatness. Armed with absolute family support, a highly fashionable wardrobe, and an unshakeable sense of self-confidence, he left his hometown and traveled to the United States to track down Red Robin, whom he had read about online. Upon arriving in the metropolis, he immediately crossed paths with Tim Drake during an unfolding crisis, forcefully inserting himself into a high-stakes rescue mission to save a captive teenager named Wonder Girl and establishing himself as a founding member of a new generation of Teen Titans. (Teen Titans v4 #3)
Miguel – who adopts the code-name Bunker – then becomes a target of N.O.W.H.E.R.E., a mysterious organization abducting super-powered youths for their own nefarious purposes. Red Robin makes contact with Bunker, and soon organizes a group of targeted teenagers into a meta-human resistance force known as the 'Teen Titans'. Together, they are able to liberate the living weapon known as Superboy and dismantle N.O.W.H.E.R.E.’s secret complex in the Antarctic
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Miguel Barragan was a exceptionally handsome, athletic Latino youth who possessed a lean, well-groomed physical build, expressive eyes, and short, stylishly coiffed dark hair. Radiating a vibrant, modern sense of fashion, he discarded traditional dark vigilante cloaks in favor of a bright, flamboyant, and meticulously designed purple-and-silver superhero costume. The outfit featured a form-fitting purple bodysuit accented by metallic silver armored padding along his shoulders, forearms, and shins to shield him from direct physical trauma. He wore a distinctive, matching purple mask that neatly framed his face while leaving his hair fully exposed, and he frequently completed the look with a flowing, stylish white scarf that trailed dynamically behind him whenever he moved or engaged in combat. (Teen Titans v4 #3) He was noted for being 19 years old. (Red Hood: Outlaw v1 #31)
Miguel claimed that he remembered his time with the Teen Titans, but he described it as being hazy as if reality itself has been reset, reborn, rebooted. (Red Hood: Outlaw v1 #32)
Powers and abilities
Bunker has the ability to create energy constructs with his mind, often creating brick-like walls and pummeling fists. His constructs manifest as purple bricks. He has full control over their density, being able to make them soft to cushion impacts or falls, or hard as rock to inflict damage. He can create a wide variety of shapes including pillars, shields, body armor, platforms to levitate himself and others, etc. He has also been shown launching his bricks as projectiles.
Miguel Barragan possessed the extraordinary, metahuman capability to generate and manipulate psionic brick-like structures composed of solid, dense purple energy. By channeling his mental focus, he could instantaneously manifest these constructs out of thin air, stacking them with precise structural integrity to create immovable defensive walls, protective shields, or elevated platforms capable of bearing immense weight. He could also weaponise this psionic energy offensively, firing rapid streams of dense bricks to batter adversaries from a distance, or enveloping his own hands in large, hard energy fists to drastically augment his striking power in close-quarters melee combat. Furthermore, because these constructs were tethered directly to his mind, he could fluidly shift their density, causing them to shatter into concussive bursts on command or reform instantly to adapt to changing tactical threats. (Teen Titans v4 #3)
At one point, he came to serve as leader of the Teen Titans. (Teen Titans Academy v1 #8)
He would come to serve as a trusted teaching assistant at Titans Academy. (Teen Titans Academy v1 #8)
Notes
- Bunker was created by Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth where he made his first appearance in Teen Titans v4 #1 (November, 2011).
- In an interview, Booth said, "We wanted to show an interesting character whose homosexuality is part of him, not something that's hidden. Sure there are gay people who you wouldn't know are gay right off the bat, but there are others who are a more flamboyant, and we thought it would be nice to actually see them portrayed in comics. Did we go over the top, I don't think so."
