Biography
Brónagh Croft was a female human born and raised in Belfast, Ireland in the late 19th century. As an Irish immigrant, she endured hardship and destitution upon her arrival. Her mother attempted to force her into a marriage with an abusive but wealthy fiancé for financial gain, prompting Brónagh to flee to England to escape the arrangement. In London, she initially found work at a laundry facility, but she was eventually let go when the business replaced its human labor force with mechanization. Left penniless and alone, she was forced into prostitution to survive, enduring frequent physical and sexual assaults from her customers. During this period, she gave birth to a daughter named Sarah, who became the center of her world; however, tragedy struck one night when Brónagh was knocked unconscious by a client who refused to pay. By the time she regained consciousness and returned home, she found that her daughter had frozen to death. This devastating loss, combined with the onset of tuberculosis—known then as consumption—deeply scarred her spirit and left her with a profound, lingering bitterness toward the men who had exploited her.
At the Mariner's Inn, she came to meet an American marksman named Ethan Chandler where they bonded over their shared status as outcasts in Victorian London. Despite her worsening consumption, they pursued a romantic relationship characterized by mutual acceptance, though she continued her work as a prostitute to maintain her independence. This profession led her to the estate of Dorian Gray, where she modeled for erotic photographs; Dorian became morbidly fascinated by her illness after she coughed up blood, leading to a sexual encounter that left her feeling deeply ashamed of her 'dying' state. Her internal conflict peaked during a trip with Ethan to the Grand Guignol theater, where a run-in with Dorian and Vanessa Ives forced her to confront the social chasm between herself and Ethan’s wealthy acquaintances. As her health failed completely, she gave Ethan her St. Jude medal which was a symbol of lost causes and became bedridden in her final days. Desperate to save her, Ethan brought Dr. Victor Frankenstein to her bedside; however, Victor saw her only as raw material for his experiments. While Ethan stepped away, believing the doctor was offering comfort, Victor instead smothered her with a pillow to ensure she would be the perfect candidate for reanimation as a mate for his first creature.
Her death at the height of her illness brought her into the grasp of Victor Frankenstein, who saw in her wasted body the raw material for his next experiment. He claimed her corpse under the guise of medical authority and spirited her away to his laboratory, where he sought to craft a companion for his first creation, the tormented being later named John Clare. Under his hands, Brona’s body was dissected, treated, and reconstituted, her flesh sutured with scientific precision and alchemical technique until she rose anew, no longer the frail prostitute but an unblemished form reborn from death. She was given the name Lily and presented as a bride to soothe the loneliness of Clare, her resurrection concealing the truth of her prior identity and life.
Lily’s soul, however, retained memories and emotions buried within her reborn self, and her spirit darkened as she discovered the truth of her creation and the manipulations of both Frankenstein and Clare. No longer bound by weakness or dependence, she embraced her newfound strength and immortality with a furious resolve, rejecting the role of a submissive consort. Her ambitions shifted toward vengeance against those who would use or discard her, and she began gathering the abused and marginalized into a movement that would topple the structures of male dominance and exploitation. In this form she ceased to be the tragic Brona and ascended as Lily Frankenstein, revolutionary and destroyer, her purpose reborn as fire to burn down the world that had once crushed her.
