History
Black Iron Prison was a large human created prison that was created on the moon of Callisto. Originally established as a state-of-the-art correctional facility on Jupiter’s dead moon, Black Iron Prison was constructed by the United Jupiter Company (UJC) over the remains of an abandoned mining colony known as Arcas. During this early period of its history, the facility was designed as a high-security monolith, intended to house the galaxy's most dangerous criminals while serving as a profitable wing of the UJC's colonial expansion. Under the strict supervision of Warden Duncan Cole, the prison's initial operations focused on a harsh regime of manual labour and absolute isolation, where inmates were used to harvest resources from the frozen Callisto landscape. However, beneath this facade of legitimate incarceration, the early years were defined by the UJC's clandestine agenda; the prison was strategically built directly above a subterranean alien structure that had been discovered decades prior. This proximity allowed the company to begin secret, unethical experiments on the inmate population, using them as unwitting test subjects in a search for a biological breakthrough known as the Callisto Protocol, all while maintaining a public image of cold, industrial efficiency. As the facility's operations matured, Black Iron Prison transitioned into a phase of heightened secrecy and rapid expansion characterized by the 'Long Winter' of its internal research. During this era, the United Jupiter Company intensified its focus on the biological data harvested from the depths of Arcas, leading to the construction of the Biomedical Research Wing and the subterranean laboratory known as the Hatch. This period saw a shift in the prison's daily life, as inmates began to vanish from the general population under the guise of 'transfers' or 'medical isolation', while they were actually being subjected to the first iterations of the Biophage pathogen. To maintain total control during these illegal trials, Warden Cole implemented a sophisticated neural link system via the CORE device that was a surgical implant fused into the base of every prisoner's neck which allowed for the constant monitoring of psychological and physiological vitals. This chapter of the prison's history was defined by a chilling atmosphere of enforced silence and systemic corruption, as the guards became increasingly militarised to suppress any whispers of the 'black lab' projects, effectively turning the entire moon into a closed-loop testing ground for the evolution of the human genome.
