Biography
Origin
Beth Chapel was an African-American woman who was a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, with a pastor father, a mother who sang in the church choir, and four brothers. (Infinity Inc. v1 #21) She was connected to the community of small-town America through her work at the local hospital, where she was often described as tireless in her efforts to treat patients regardless of circumstance or background. During this period, she served as an assistant to Dr. Charles McNider, the original Dr. Mid-Nite, who had long since retired from active heroism but continued his work in medicine. Beth admired his brilliance as both a doctor and a hero, studying under him to further her own medical expertise. Her life changed forever when she was caught in an explosion caused by an act of violence at the hospital, leaving her blinded by the blast. (Infinity, Inc. v1 #19)
Jade of Infinity, Inc. came to rush Beth to a hospital for treatment after encountering Mister Bones' cyanide touch. (Infinity Inc. v1 #19) During the onset of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Beth was blinded by an oxygen explosion, only to be rescued by Hourman's son Rick Tyler, who had taken his father's Miraclo to enhance his strength. Dr. McNider performed emergency surgery on Beth, and while he could not restore her day vision, he did give her his ability to see in the dark. Following the explosion, Beth’s recovery was long and uncertain, but under the mentorship of Charles McNider, she discovered that she could still perceive the world through an unusual adaptation to darkness. While her eyes could no longer function normally in light, she found that she could see clearly in complete darkness, mirroring McNider’s own condition. Realizing that her mentor had once fought crime as Dr. Mid-Nite, Beth resolved to take up his mantle, using her skills as both a doctor and a fighter to continue his legacy. She designed her own costume equipped with blackout bombs and specialized lenses that allowed her to move freely in darkness, while her medical knowledge became an invaluable tool both in and out of combat. Joining the superhero team Infinity, Inc., Beth Chapel operated alongside other young heroes, balancing her dual life as a physician and a costumed protector. (Infinity Inc. v1 #20)
Beth and Rick assume the mantles of their predecessors as Doctor Midnight and Hourman, with her mother crafting a super hero costume from a choir robe. Along with a new Wildcat, Chapel and Tyler applied for membership in Infinity, Inc, eventually gaining admission. As Dr. Mid-Nite, Beth dedicated herself to both healing and heroism, often working in the field to treat the wounded while also engaging in direct missions with her teammates. Her commitment to saving lives extended beyond the battlefield; she maintained her medical practice and offered aid to both civilians and fellow heroes injured in action. During her time with Infinity, Inc., she formed strong bonds with her teammates and proved herself an essential part of their operations, combining intellect and bravery in equal measure. (Infinity, Inc. v1 #21)
Doctor Midnight and Wildcat were subsequently recruited by the U.S. government for a mission to defeat the supervillain Eclipso, only for Chapel to die on the mission along with Wildcat, the Creeper, Commander Steel, Peacemaker, and Major Victory. (Eclipso v1 #13)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Elizabeth Chapel was supposed to exist on Prime Earth but her existence was erased after Doctor Manhattan prevented Alan Scott from becoming the Green Lantern and, as a consequence, his death prevented the creation of the Justice Society of America. (Doomsday Clock v1 #10) Beth Chapel was returned to life alongside the rest of the restored Justice Society of America and the Legion of Super-Heroes thanks to the influence of Doctor Manhattan. She now sports a more traditional costume resembling that of McNider and Cross. Following the fight against Black Adam's group and the foreign superheroes, Chapel is mentioned to have opened a metahuman medical clinic called the All-Star Clinic where Ronnie Raymond is receiving treatment. (Doomsday Clock v1 #12)
Chapel as Doctor Mid-Nite is seen giving superhero medical treatment to Jon Kent after his powers fail and he is injured. (Superman: Son of Kal-El v1 #16) Doctor Mid-Nite was seen with the Justice Society of America when they are fighting Angle Man and his army of inter-dimensional Bizarros until Angle Man is defeated by a Huntress from an alternate future. After Green Lantern's ring confirms Huntress' story and her encounter with Per Degaton, Doctor Mid-Nite suggests that they call in Hourman II. The JSA then came to be confronted by Per Degaton. (Justice Society of America v4 #3)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Beth Chapel was depicted as a tall, athletic African-American woman with long dark hair, which she sometimes wore tied back during her medical work or beneath her costume’s cowl. Her Dr. Mid-Nite uniform consisted of a dark bodysuit—typically black or deep blue—with a red and white cape and a crescent moon emblem displayed on her chest. The design echoed that of Charles McNider’s original costume while introducing her own refinements, such as specialized goggles and utility pouches for medical and combat equipment. (Infinity, Inc. v1 #19)
Beth Chapel was compassionate, selfless, and determined, embodying the ideals of both a healer and a hero. She was deeply committed to her work as a physician, viewing the Hippocratic Oath as inseparable from her duties as a crimefighter. Her approach to heroism was rooted not in vengeance or adventure but in responsibility—she fought because she believed that to save lives, one must sometimes confront those who endanger them. Despite her blindness, she displayed remarkable independence and refused to be defined by her disability, often serving as a source of inspiration to those around her. Her calm intelligence and empathy made her one of the moral centers of Infinity, Inc., as well as a worthy successor to the Dr. Mid-Nite legacy. (Infinity, Inc. v1 #22)
Powers and abilities
Beth Chapel was an ordinary human and thus had no superhuman powers or enhancements. As such, she had all the basic traits of a human being, though her physical conditioning and combat training placed her well above average. Due to the accident that blinded her, she could no longer see in normal light but possessed the unique ability to see clearly in total darkness, an inversion of normal human vision. To aid her hero work, she used specialized blackout bombs that plunged areas into darkness where she alone could see, giving her a tactical advantage against opponents. Her medical expertise made her an expert in anatomy, first aid, and surgical care, allowing her to treat wounds both in combat and in the field. Combined with her agility, intelligence, and advanced equipment, Beth Chapel was a capable and formidable hero despite lacking superhuman abilities. (Infinity, Inc. v1 #23)
