Stand Alone Complex
Prior to joining section 9, Batou served in the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, in the elite Ranger unit. It was there that he was outfitted with his grey, goggle-like cybernetic eyes, standard equipment for Rangers. He and his compatriots were involved in World War IV and deployed to South America alongside Motoko Kusanagi, where they accidentally stumbled across an American Imperial Navy unit conducting a covert operation codenamed Project Sunset, which consisted of soldiers earning the trust of communities and then carrying out war crimes, spreading terror and chaos in the enemy ranks. During that time, Batou joined the U.S army and fought in World War III, where he worked alongside Marco Amoretti. The two had a positive friendship as soldiers, until Amoretti became scarred by the war and parted ways with Batou, who joined the special military division known as The Rangers, under the service of Japan. After leaving the Rangers and joining the Japanese army, Batou stumbled upon the US army and Amoretti again during a battle and saw what the latter had become. Following this event, Batou continued to serve in the Japanese army. Later, during World War IV, around the same time as the Peninsular War, the ex-ranger was deployed by Japan to stop a terrorist organization. He was placed placed under command of a new field commander: the fully-cyberized woman known as Motoko Kusanagi. By then, Batou and Motoko have known each other for a little while, although she is rather distant towards him. Assisted by combat engineer Ishikawa, Motoko and Batou teamed up with a group of British and American soldiers to fight the terrorists. However, during the patrol, the teams were quickly attacked by gunfire from multiple directions. The shots initially passed off as an ambush, but Motoko correctly deduced there was in fact only one person - a sniper. Batou and Ishikawa convinced the slightly bigoted soldiers to listen to Motoko. Batou then helped her get to the sniper alongside the rest of the soldiers. Ultimately, the British and the Americans mostly perished, and Motoko managed to arrest the sniper, Saito, who later joined her, Batou and Ishikawa to form Public Security Section 9.
During the high-stakes hostage crisis at a geopolitical summit, Batou operated as the heavy tactical support for Section 9, providing crucial overwatch and muscle during the infiltration of the Minister’s residence. He spent the initial phase of the operation positioned outside with the Tachikomas, maintaining a vigilant perimeter while the Major conducted her solo entry. When the situational complexity escalated due to the possibility of a "Ghost Hack" affecting the hostages, Batou moved with practiced, cybernetic precision to secure the grounds, utilizing his heightened sensory input and military-grade physique to neutralise external threats. Throughout the mission, he maintained a constant tactical link with the rest of the team, displaying the seasoned professionalism of a former ranger while simultaneously managing the eccentric AI of the Tachikoma units. After the Major successfully apprehended the primary suspect and the political conspiracy began to unravel, Batou remained on-site to assist in the cleanup and extraction, his stoic demeanour serving as the grounding force for the unit's field operations. He concluded the assignment by retreating into the shadows of the city alongside his comrades, having ensured that the delicate balance of national security remained undisturbed by the night's digital and physical violence. During the investigation into a hijacked Think Tank that had gone rogue from a testing facility, Batou took a primary role in the high-speed pursuit across the region's highways. He navigated the team’s transport vehicle with aggressive precision, coordinating closely with the Major as they attempted to intercept the experimental multi-legged tank before it reached a populated urban centre. Throughout the chase, Batou displayed his characteristic blend of tactical intuition and raw power, preparing for a dangerous boarding manoeuvre to physically disable the machine's external sensors. When the pursuit culminated at the home of the tank’s deceased lead designer, Batou moved in to provide cover, witnessing the haunting revelation that the pilot was not a hijacker, but the designer's own digitized consciousness seeking a final, physical confrontation with his parents. As the Major used the Tachikoma's natural oil to blind the tank’s cameras, Batou stood ready to deal the finishing blow, yet he ultimately observed a rare moment of technological tragedy as the machine ceased its rampage upon reaching its destination. By the end of the operation, he helped secure the site, once again acting as the reliable physical anchor for Section 9 while reflecting on the blurred lines between human memory and machine hardware.
Arise
Overview
Personality and attributes
He was a battle-hardened cyborg special operative with a long distinguished military career and a no-nonsense attitude.
Though he looks imposing, he was known for his warm heart, sense of humor, and love for animals.
Of all Section 9 members, Batou was the closest to the Major professionally and in civilian life. Even on missions, he was known to disregard her rank or authority to "speak freely" without permission.
Batou was the favorite of the Tachikomas, as he showered them with care and affection. He had even dubbed one his "personal" Tachikoma, refusing to operate any other on an assignment and treating it with "natural oil", both habits which culminated in problems.
Powers and abilities
Batou's limbs were all prosthetic; despite the fact that exercise provides negligible benefit, Batou enjoyed jogging and weightlifting as a hobby.
