The Auditors of Reality
The group coalesced to ensure that atoms spin, gravity pulls, and chemical reactions execute proper cosmic paperwork. Rather than acting out of malice, the entity block harbored a deep-seated hatred for life, organic matter, and mortal imagination because living organisms were messy, erratic, and unpredictable, forcing the system to fall behind on their data ledgers. The coalition actively plotted to wipe out sentient lifeforms, launching a tactical manipulation campaign to force the personification of Death into early retirement. The administration subsequently financed an underworld executioner named Mr. Teatime to systematically slaughter the Hogfather—intending to freeze human development, stop the flow of chronological time loops, and reduce the universe to tidy, sterile rocks orbiting stars in neat elliptical paths. Reaper Man)
They came to believe that Death had grown to be too sympathetic towards humanity and thus they decided to force him to retire. However, Azrael intervened due to being the Death of the Universe and ruler of all Deaths whereupon he overturned this decision which allowed for Death to return to his job. (Reaper Man)
Overview
In appearance, the Auditors of Reality were a cosmic collective whose infinite ranks of formless non-beings and abstract constants completely rejected unique physical attributes, body variations, or distinct biological frameworks. They featured an incredibly irregular, utterly uniform collective build that lacked any solid bone mass, facial contours, or human anatomy, existing naturally as formless plumes of gray smoke. The organization possessed no individual hairstyles, skin pigmentations, or facial ages due to their complete absence of identity, with every single unit existing as an identical facsimile of the next. They expanded their visual identity by enforcing a rigid, monochromatic dress standard designed to project absolute drabness, dullness, and mechanical utility. Their garments consisted of identical, empty gray cowled robes and heavy fabric cloaks that hovered seamlessly in mid-air without containing physical physical forms. When active field operations required them to engage in group consultations, they universally gathered in strict, unmoving blocks of three to completely isolate themselves from developing personal expressions of style. (Hogfather)
They lacked any shared organic biological vulnerabilities or human cellular traits because its entire workforce was composed of primeval abstract concepts and incorporeal mathematical algorithms rather than living carbon-based species. They relied on their collective eons of data-processing and hundred-dimensional tracking metrics to execute precise cosmic adjustments, monitor the atomic movements of galaxies, and manipulate the laws of physics. They did not possess standard human bipedal locomotion, five-fingered manual dexterity, or technology-dependent small arms, relying instead on an absolute, omnipresent level of near-omnipotence. Their specialized capabilities allowed them to instantly reshape the physical frameworks of the universe, rewrite memories directly into mortal brain networks without speaking, and survive the vacuum of space without protective equipment. However, the system possessed a fatal structural flaw: their robotic data-processing mainframes could not comprehend individuality or paradoxes. If an individual Auditor used the forbidden words "I" or "Me," experienced an emotion, or looked directly at a logically impossible instruction like an arrow pointing left labeled "turn right," their underlying energy matrix would instantly undergo a catastrophic, reality-warping cellular culling, causing them to implode into non-existence before a blank new replacement stepped into their data slot. (Thief of Time)
It was said that the Auditors could not be described in ordinary language. Death came to refer to them as servants and watchers like himself that were able to appear before Azrael. (Reaper Man) The Auditors were said to be running the universe and ensured that gravity worked whilst the atoms spun. (Hogfather)
