History

Origin

Asteroid M was a space station built into an asteroid that was constructed by Magneto. Magneto constructed it as a secret, high-tech headquarters and a safe haven for his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, away from human interference on Earth. (X-Men v1 #5)

The X-Men learned of its existence after Magneto and his new recruits, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, kidnapped the Angel and held him captive on the station. The X-Men, despite Professor X being in a feigned coma, used a rocket to travel to the asteroid to rescue their teammate and confront the Brotherhood. A significant event on the station involved a device that amplified Magneto's powers, which the X-Men had to overcome. The conflict culminated in the station's destruction; the Scarlet Witch, who was reluctant to follow Magneto's villainous agenda and opposed his plan to kill the X-Men, sabotaged a critical button or component within the base, causing the entire Asteroid M to be destroyed and crash into the ocean off the coast of San Francisco. The X-Men and the Brotherhood members, including Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch who then joined the X-Men for a time, evacuated the collapsing station. (X-Men v1 #5)

The asteroid was later approached by a stolen space shuttle taken by a group of Mutants led by Fabian Cortez. These Mutants came seeking the leadership of Magneto and wanted him to guide them in a world that hated them. Magneto then told them that Mutants were destined to rule the world and take over from mankind with this leading to a religious fervour among the travellers. They began to see Magneto as a 'Mutant Messiah' and after accepting them as his followers he came to call the his Acolytes. (X-Men v2 #1)

Utopia

Years later, the X-Club under the direction of Cyclops began to conduct work on the sunken asteroid as Summers had decided that he needed to keep all surviving Mutants together off U.S. soil to avoid persecution by the government. At the time of the Dark Reign, the danger was posed by Director Norman Osborn and his H.A.M.M.E.R. peacekeeping agency. Thus, they raised the asteroid above water where it became an island mass located off the San Francisco Bay with this being referred to as Utopia. It was then that all the X-Men moved from their former headquarters at Graymalkin Industries in the city to their new island home. (Dark Avengers v1 #8)

It was later restored and became the capital of the Mutant nation of New Tian during the time Hydra had taken over the world. (X-Men: Blue v1 #7)

Magneto eventually decided to return to the old ways of enforcing Mutant rule in the world. This saw him assemble a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants that was based on a new Asteroid M situated in orbit. (X-Men: Blue v1 #34)

Overview

In appearance, Asteroid M was a jagged asteroid that orbited the planet Earth and had structures built on its surface. The entire structure consisted of the raw rock, which was described as being several cubic miles in size, with advanced technological facilities built directly onto and into its surface. The exterior retained the rough, unrefined look of a natural space rock. Internally, the base was highly advanced, featuring multiple levels with facilities such as an observation deck offering a spectacular view of the Earth below, hangar bays, a library, medical facilities, living quarters, a training room, and a swimming pool. The interior aesthetic was functional and metallic, incorporating cutting-edge technology that included a device to amplify Magneto's powers and a cloaking mechanism to hide it from human radar. After acquiring Cerebro's Mutant Power Circuit, Magneto took the part to the asteroid where he used it to amplify his powers to draw the Scorpio comet to set it on a collision course to Earth in order to wipe out mankind. This led to the X-Men traveling to Asteroid M to stop Magneto's plan where Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler managed to force the Master of Magnetism to use his powers to redirect the Scorpio comet to the asteroid. This would destroy the base with the Brotherhood and X-Men escaping before the comet hit it.
