Biography
Satoshi (Japanese: サトシ)
Ash grew up in Pallet Town in the Kanto region with his mother, Delia, as his father spent most of his time traveling. Eventually, Ash would meet Professor Oak and his grandson Gary Oak. In Seeing the Forest for the Trees!, Ash remembered getting lost in a forest while looking for Pokémon. He brought some wild Pokémon out of the rain and found them some shelter in a tree trunk. Ash's happiness about that moment made him think about how much he wanted to become a Pokémon Trainer. At the age of six, Ash learned that Professor Oak would be holding a Pokémon Summer Camp, and eagerly asked his mother Delia if he could attend. Seeing her son's enthusiasm, she signed him up but also told him that she had things to do outside of the home during the day the camp would take place, so he would have to get himself there in time on his own. Unfortunately for Ash, he ended up breaking his alarm clock in his sleep and overslept, missing the camp. Later, Ash managed to attend another one of Professor Oak's Pokémon Summer Camps. One day, another camper named Serena got lost in the forest and wounded her leg after getting startled by a Poliwag. Ash, who was looking for the Poliwag, came to her rescue and wrapped a handkerchief around the wounded knee to brace it. He then helped her up and guided her out of the forest. Ash and Gary used to be friends at one point in time and even went to watch movies together. Ash recalled a day when he was about to start his Pokémon journey. He and Gary Oak both fished out an old, rusty Poké Ball, which snagged on both their lines. After arguing about who would keep it, they broke it in two, each keeping one half as a reminder of that day.
Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn, rash, and amateur Pokémon Trainer. Ash Ketchum woke up late on the day he was supposed to receive his first Pokémon, having accidentally smashed his alarm clock in his sleep. He rushed to Professor Oak’s laboratory in his pyjamas, only to find that the three standard starter Pokémon—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—had already been taken by other trainers who arrived on time. Professor Oak then presented him with a disobedient and stubborn Pikachu, who initially refused to enter its Poké Ball and shocked Ash with a powerful bolt of electricity. As they set out from Pallet Town, Ash attempted to catch a Pidgey on his own since Pikachu would not help, but he accidentally angered a flock of Spearow instead. To save his new partner from the relentless avian attack, Ash stole a bicycle from a girl named Misty and pedalled furiously through a thunderstorm. When the Spearow finally cornered them, Ash stood in front of Pikachu to protect him, an act of selfless bravery that finally won the Pokémon's respect. Pikachu leaped into the air and absorbed a bolt of lightning, releasing a massive thunder shock that defeated the entire flock and destroyed Misty's bike in the process. As the storm cleared, Ash witnessed a shimmering, golden bird flying toward a rainbow, marking a legendary beginning to his long journey to become a Pokémon Master.
Ash Ketchum traveled to Pewter City, where he immediately set his sights on earning his first Boulder Badge from the local Gym Leader, Brock. Upon entering the gym, he discovered that Brock specialized in Rock-type Pokémon, which placed his Electric-type Pikachu at a severe type disadvantage. During their initial confrontation, Pikachu’s attacks proved completely ineffective against the hardened exterior of Brock’s Onix, leading to a swift and demoralizing defeat for the young trainer. Rather than giving up, Ash encountered a mysterious man named Flint, who helped him find a way to supercharge Pikachu’s power by connecting the Pokémon to a local hydro-electric power plant. With this artificial boost, Ash returned for a rematch and managed to trigger the gym's overhead sprinkler system during the chaos of the battle. The falling water soaked Onix, making the rock giant conductive and allowing Pikachu to deliver a finishing electrical strike that finally brought the creature down. Although the victory felt hollow to him due to the accidental help from the sprinklers, Brock was moved by Ash’s spirit and the clear bond he shared with his Pokémon, ultimately deciding to award him the badge anyway. Before Ash departed for his next destination, Brock chose to leave the gym in the hands of his father and joined Ash on his quest, marking the beginning of their long-standing friendship.
