Biography

Aquarius was a kind of living star who had been on trial for his crimes by other living stars and sentenced to wandering the multiverse. It despises order and tries to upset the Universe, but has lost most of its power by the Stars' Judgement.

He was introduced as a powerful cosmic entity of living starlight who takes control of the astral plane. His emergence destabilizes the cosmic balance, causing the Justice League and the Justice Society to unite against him. He begins by scattering members of both teams across dimensions and alternate realms, forcing them into perilous situations. His manipulations are not random but calculated, as he draws strength from chaos and fear, using his cosmic power to weaken the heroes. The League and Society eventually regroup to confront him, but his overwhelming energy makes him nearly invulnerable in battle. (Justice League of America v1 #72) Aquarius escalates his campaign by attempting to enslave an entire dimension. He demonstrates his ability to warp reality and conjure constructs of starlight, projecting beams capable of devastating matter and restraining even super-powered beings. During this conflict, the heroes work tirelessly to resist his dimensional manipulations. Black Canary plays a crucial role, resisting his psychic domination and inspiring the others to continue their efforts despite Aquarius’s near-godlike might. The combined power of the Justice League and Justice Society ultimately forces Aquarius to retreat, though not without great cost. (Justice League of America v1 #73) Aquarius makes his most infamous move by unleashing his energy directly against the heroes in a final bid for dominance. During the conflict, the Spectre intervenes to oppose him, channeling his divine energies against Aquarius’s cosmic power. The battle culminates in Aquarius striking down Red Tornado, whose sacrifice allows the teams the opportunity to exploit a weakness in Aquarius’s control. The Spectre ultimately channels his power to banish Aquarius from the astral plane, restoring balance. This storyline not only showcases Aquarius’s incredible might but also underscores the scale of threat he posed, one requiring the intervention of mystical forces alongside the League and Society to overcome. (Justice League of America v1 #74)

When it reaches the Earth-Two dimension, the hero Starman (Ted Knight) confronts it. Aquarius steals Starman's cosmic rod and uses it to increase its own powers and form. Aquarius is seen by Black Canary, who contacts the JSA (Black Canary, Earth-2 Superman, Earth-2 Wonder Woman, Dr. Midnite, Dr. Fate, Red Tornado). The JSA soon find they are no match for Aquarius. Aquarius uses the cosmic rod to banish all people and objects from Earth 2 to another dimension. Dr. Fate manages to save the JSA by erecting a mystical shield. Dr. Fate theorizes that the consciousness of the Justice Society members are the only link that the banished population have with that reality, and if the heroes die, the inhabitants of Earth 2 will be lost forever. The JSA sends the Red Tornado to seek help from the Justice League on Earth 1. Due to a misunderstanding, the JLA's response is delayed, and they arrive as Dr. Fate's barrier is weakening. Aquarius flees, but uses a hypnotic suggestion to convince the JSA to attack the JLA. The JLA(Superman, Batman, Atom (Ray Palmer), Green Lantern, Flash and Earth-One Green Arrow) are able to subdue the JSA, and Green Lantern uses his power ring to trace Aquarius. Aquarius uses his power to fire a yellow energy ball at the Black Canary. Her husband Larry Lance, throws himself in front of the energy ball, sacrificing his life for his wife. This failed attack allows all residents of Earth-2 to return.

After Larry Lance's funeral, Aquarius reappears to mock the two teams and heads to Earth-1. The combined teams pursue him, but Aquarius locks the entrance to Earth-1. The combined powers of Greens Lanterns Hal Jordan and Alan Scott are able to overcome the barrier. The two Lanterns lure Aquarius into the antimatter universe of Qward. Aquarius is destroyed in a matter/antimatter explosion. At the end, Black Canary decides to move from Earth-1 to Earth-2.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Aquarius was depicted as a humanoid figure composed entirely of starlight, his form a shimmering body of glowing blue and yellow cosmic energy. He often appears in a vaguely regal shape, with star patterns visible across his body, giving him the appearance of a living constellation. His visage shifts in brightness and scale, at times towering over the heroes like a giant while at others condensing into a more compact humanoid form. (Justice League of America v1 #72)

In terms of personality, Aquarius was arrogant, domineering, and power-hungry. He viewed himself as a cosmic superior to mortals and even to gods, regarding the Justice League and Justice Society as insignificant insects before his power. His hunger for domination over realms and dimensions was matched only by his sadistic tendency to toy with his foes, scattering them across realities and seeking to break their morale before destroying them. (Justice League of America v1 #73)

Powers and abilities

In terms of abilities, Aquarius possesses vast cosmic energy powers, including energy projection, dimensional manipulation, and the ability to exist as living starlight. He is capable of scattering beings across dimensions, exerting psychic domination, and withstanding coordinated attacks from entire teams of heroes. His energy beams are powerful enough to destroy or incapacitate super-powered beings, while his reality-warping abilities allow him to reshape environments to his advantage. Only the mystical intervention of the Spectre and the sacrifice of Red Tornado enabled the heroes to finally overcome him. (Justice League of America v1 #74)

Aquarius had he ability to control minds, to give life and three-dimensional form to two-dimensional figures, to increasing the strength of a 4-year-old boy to superhuman levels, to make clouds rain down fire balls, and transport objects to another dimension. It can emanate star-like heat and light, and can change the spectrum of the light emitted to any color. It has the ability to gather energy into a ball and fire it like a projectile. Aquarius' powers increased while in possession of Starman's cosmic rod. Unfortunantly, Aquarius was seriously insane, which was why the Living Stars stripped him of all but the power needed to stay barely alive.
