Biography

Origin

Arañita in Amazing Fantasy v2 #1.

Aña Sofía Corazón

In an average first day at school, she saw her friend Lynn being bullied by an older boy. Anya defended her friend, sparking a fight. A teacher broke their conflict up, but that night the two went down to a bridge in a nearby park to resume their battle. When she got there, Anya discovered a stranger being attacked by a strange group. This Sisterhood of the Wasp attempted to kill the man, but Anya leaped in the way of the killing blow. This site was allegedly a sacred spot. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #1) The man, Miguel Legar, was the sorcerer of the Spider Society, a secret group dating back for hundreds of years. Recognizing that Anya had the ability to become the new Hunter of the Spider Society, he transferred some of his power to her to save her life. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #2) As Legar's partner, Anya visited the WebCorps Headquarters, a shell company used to hide the Spider Society's actions, and became suddenly involved in the war against the Wasps. When Legar got caught in a bad situation when doing reckon work, WebCorps enlisted Anya to rescue him. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #3) During the confrontation, Anya was shot in her arm. The wound became a spider-shaped metallic tattoo. At WebCorps, she was informed of her birthright role as a chosen initiate for the Spider Society. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #4)

Araña

Aña Sofía Corazón in Araña: The Heart of the Spider v1 #1.

As Arana, Anya operated as a vigilante in New York City, learning to channel her mystical powers, which initially manifested as a chitinous exoskeleton that granted her enhanced durability and strength. She trained under Miguel Legar and developed her combat skills while facing threats from the Sisterhood of the Wasp, including their assassins and mystical creatures. Anya’s dual life placed a strain on her relationships, particularly with her father, Gil Corazon, a journalist whose investigations often intersected with her activities. Despite her inexperience, she displayed courage and a natural aptitude for heroism, foiling criminal operations and supernatural plots across the city. (Araña: The Heart of the Spider v1 #1) She had to grapple with the physical and mental fallout of her sudden initiation into the Spider Society. After surviving a near-fatal encounter at her school, she spent much of the day attempting to balance her mundane life as a student with her new, exhausting responsibilities as an Agent of the Society. She met with her mentor, Miguel, who provided her with a tactical training suit and explained the ancient conflict between the Society and the Sisterhood of the Wasp. Throughout this time, Anya struggled to master her exoskeleton ability, discovering that her protective blue carapace responded to her emotional state and stress levels. Her resolve was tested when she faced her first true mission, where she had to utilise her enhanced strength and agility to infiltrate a secure location. Despite her fear and confusion over the mystical 'Hunter' destiny thrust upon her, she displayed a stubborn courage, ultimately committing herself to the secret war despite the danger it posed to her relationship with her father. (Araña: The Heart of the Spider v1 #2)

Corazon underwent a gruelling initiation into the secret world of the Spider Society while attempting to maintain the illusion of a normal teenage life for her father’s sake. She engaged in a series of rigorous training exercises under Miguel’s watchful eye, where she struggled to voluntarily summon her blue carapace without the trigger of life-threatening adrenaline. Her internal conflict intensified as she was forced to lie to her best friend, Lynn, causing a visible strain on her social life that she found increasingly difficult to reconcile with her new identity as a Hunter. The tension peaked when she was deployed on a mission to investigate a Sisterhood of the Wasp front, where she had to navigate a high-stakes environment using her newfound wall-crawling abilities and enhanced reflexes. Despite her lack of experience, she demonstrated an instinctive tactical mind, managing to retrieve vital intelligence while narrowly avoiding detection, which solidified her status as a vital, albeit reluctant, asset in the Society's ancient shadow war. (Araña: The Heart of the Spider v1 #3)

After losing her exoskeleton powers during a confrontation between the Spider Society and the Sisterhood, Anya continued operating as a non-powered vigilante for a time, relying on her training and acrobatics to compensate. Eventually, she was taken under the wing of Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers), joining her team of young heroes and later assisting Spider-Man during his battles against global threats. Her time among other heroes honed her sense of responsibility and deepened her connection to the wider superhero community. Anya’s friendship with other young heroes, such as Rikki Barnes and Nomad, positioned her as one of the more grounded and determined members of her generation. (Ms. Marvel v2 #34)

Spider-Girl

The new Spider-Girl in Spider-Girl v2 #1.

She took down most of the agents in the dark, virtually unseen. She called the Red-Hulk for help and destroyed a machine that kept the American Ninjas in line. They turned on Godwin, and almost killed him before Spider-Man and Red Hulk arrived to stop them. Anya then proceeded to rescue her friend and showed Rocky who she really was. Rocky then revealed she already knew, and they exchanged a hug. Before the events of Spider-Island, Anya and her group were attacked by Hydro-Man and beaten single handedly, until Spider-Man stepped in and defeated the villain. (Amazing Spider-Man v2 #666)

Anya later aided the Avengers, the New Avengers, the X-Men, and the Future Foundation with her allies in taking down the two-hundred Spider-Man imposters in Bryant Park on Manhattan. (Amazing Spider-Man v2 #670)

During the events of Spider-Island, Anya was attacked by agents of the Sisterhood after school and fled by web-swinging to get her friend Rocky to safety. Explaining her time as Araña battling the Sisterhood, she was confronted by the Hand and found that Wilson Fisk wanted to team up with her. While she initially refused, Madame Web Julia Carpenter came to Spider-Girl later and told her that she must ally herself with her enemies. Reluctantly, she agreed to work with Wilson Fisk given the danger at hand, who ordered a squadron of ninjas from the Hand under her command. With this group, she attempted to stop the Wasps from killing off the spiders infected citizens. (Spider-Island: The Amazing Spider-Girl v1 #1)

However, Spider-Girl later realized that Madame Web had meant for her to team up with the Wasps, and slow down the Spiders, so that a cure could be found. Eventually, the Spiders were defeated and a cure was administered to everyone in the city, including Anya. However, she seemed to have retained her powers despite being 'cured', suggesting she was not given the real cure or she was immune to the antidote. (Spider-Island: The Amazing Spider-Girl v1 #3)

When a massive Terrigen cloud began spreading across the Earth, Anya turned to the Avengers for help in rescuing two Terrigen Cocoons. Spider-Girl and her allies soon realized they were caught in a war between AIM and Toxie Doxie, a mad geneticist whose deal with AIM had turned sour. Unable to fight AIM given the technocracy's current diplomatic immunity, the Avengers and Anya were forced to move carefully. (Avengers Assemble v2 #21) Anya spent much of the time learning how to operate with the Avengers and also received a new costume. (Avengers Assemble v2 #22.INH)

Spider-Verse

Joining the Spider-Totems in Spider-Verse Team-Up v1 #3.

Spider-Girl became Jessica Drew's protégé, and joined the Multiversal Spider-Army when the Inheritors threatened to destroy every Spider from all realities. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #10) Her abilities were indispensable for the Spider-Army as her involvement helped discover the Inheritors' plan, thus utilizing her powers and relationship with the Spider Society allowed her to read their scrolls, deducing how best to defeat and banish the Inheritors. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #11)

After the Inheritors were defeated and exiled to an irradiated Earth, the spider totems proceeded to return to their respective realities. After the universe of Spider-UK was revealed to have been destroyed while he was fighting the Inheritors, he decided to stay in Loomworld, the former base of the Inheritors, and use the Web of Life and Destiny to reach out to any reality in need of a Spider-Man. Spider-Girl decided to join him to utilize her knowledge of the totems. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #15)

Some time later, when Superior Octopus used Inheritor Technology to create more clone bodies, the Web-Warriors could not prevent the Inheritors from using that same technology to escape their prison on a desolate Earth. (Spider-Geddon v1 #1)

The trio reunite with the rest of the Spider-Army, with armor crafted from the Great Web itself and defeated the Inheritors, who were then turned into babies cleansed of their totemic appetite. (Spider-Geddon v1 #5)

End of the Spider-Verse

Araña returns in Edge of Spider-Verse v2 #1.

Anya later returned to the alias of Araña after her Spider-Girl costume was shredded by Vermin's clones. Madame Web explained that Araña's original powers were returning to her, and that a new hunter known as Delilah has awakened to the return of Shathra. The Web-Weaver made her a new costume, Araña confronted Delilah at a music concert and defeated the villain, after which Madame Web appeared to tell her that the Web needed her help. (Edge of Spider-Verse v2 #1) Araña traveled the Spider-Verse with Madame Web building their Spider-Army ranks, even with the unlikely recruitment of Morlun. (Spider-Man v4 #1)

After the fall of Shathra, Aña was on a college assignment to the American Museum of Natural History where she spotted a cat burglar stealing an artifact. Quickly changing into her costume, Araña caught up with the burglar who shot back, revealing that both of them used webs. They grappled and were about to be apprehended, when the burglar used a device that pulled both of them into another reality. There, she revealed herself to be Aña Corazón herself, still going by Spider-Girl, and explained that she only stole the Totem of Andrina to rescue her parents. (Spider-Verse Unlimited Infinity Comic v1 #44) Araña was shocked to be on a world where her parents were still alive and went on to touch base with her other self, immediately becoming friends with her. Agreeing to assist in the rescue mission, she went to the Church of Andrina's base where Spider-Girl's parents were being held hostage. (Spider-Verse Unlimited Infinity Comic v1 #45) Inside, they found Spider-Girl's found Gil and Sofía bound and gagged, but have walked into a trap. Spider-Girl and Araña were knocked-out with the sleeping gas and restrained. The Church performed a ritual that used their Spider-Totem energies on the Totem of Andrina to open the portal from which their master Krakinos came through. (Spider-Verse Unlimited Infinity Comic v1 #46) Using her cryo power to shatter her restraints, Spider-Girl broke free and used the same method to free Araña as well. Spider-Girl engaged Krakinos, while Araña grabbed the Totem of Andrina out of its protective case. Touching the Totem with bare skin reversed the polarity of the portal, which began sucking everything back in. Spider-Girl kicked Krakinos back through the portal, and the cultists followed their master. Sofía and Gil were about to fall in as well, but Araña caught them with her webs. Spider-Girl smashes the Totem of Andrina, closing the portal. Sofía and Gil hugged their daughter as well as Araña, whom they called part of their family before returning to Earth-616. (Spider-Verse Unlimited Infinity Comic v1 #47)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Aña Corazón in Araña: The Heart of the Spider V1 #12.

In appearance, Anya Corazon was a teenage Latina girl with long brown hair and brown eyes. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #1) As Araña, her costume was a casual and practical outfit that she chose and assembled herself. It consisted of red and blue sneakers, a pair of blue track pants, a red backpack, and red gloves that featured numerous pockets. Instead of a full bodysuit, she wore a white t-shirt adorned with a distinctive red spider symbol. Another key component of her look was a large pair of yellow-lensed goggles, which completed her makeshift ensemble. This costume was chosen in rejection of the more traditional superhero outfits she was offered by WebCorps, and it reflected her character by emphasizing a more personal, street-level approach to crime-fighting. In addition to her constructed attire, a protective, bluish, bug-like exoskeleton would instinctively form over much of her body, giving her a distinct insectoid appearance when her powers were active. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #5) After adopting the Spider-Girl identity, she switched to a sleeker black-and-white costume inspired by Spider-Man’s own design. (Spider-Girl v2 #1)

Anya Corazon was established as a deeply empathetic and brave individual, even before gaining any superpowers. This was demonstrated during her accidental encounter with a magical conflict in a park. Witnessing a thug attack the mage Miguel with a knife, Anya did not hesitate to intervene, despite the clear and present danger. This impulsive act of selflessness, motivated by a powerful sense of justice, resulted in her being mortally wounded. Her willingness to risk her own life for a complete stranger highlighted an inherent heroic streak within her character, a defining trait that would later shape her path as the hero Araña. Her actions proved that her heroic qualities came from her personality, rather than solely from the spider-powers she received afterward. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #1)

Corazon was also portrayed as rebellious and determined, a personality trait she demonstrated even before her transformation. On her first day at a new high school, she confronted a school bully who was harassing her friend, despite being clearly outmatched physically. When a teacher broke up the fight, Anya, instead of backing down, defiantly arranged a rematch with the bully, showing she was unwilling to let the injustice stand. This stubbornness and fiery spirit were again evident when her father later lectured her on the need to stay out of trouble, which she dismissed, indicating a strong independent streak and a tendency to forge her own path, regardless of the consequences. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #1)

Her father was Gilberto Corazón who worked as an investigative reporter whilst her mother was Sofía Corazón. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #1)

Powers and abilities

Empowered with spider totem powers in Spider-Girl v2 #1.

It was shown that she was bilingual with her being fluent in both Spanish and English. (Young Allies v2 #2)

Anya Corazon was a superhuman being with powers derived from the spider totem that bonded to her body. Initially, this granted her enhanced agility, reflexes, superhuman strength, and the ability to generate a protective exoskeleton that increased her durability. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #1)

From her spider-shaped tattoo on her arm, a mystical exoskeletal protective, bug-like carapace that emanated that could cover her body. This bluish, crusty armor was not an inherent ability of a Spider Society Hunter, but a unique development for Anya. The power manifested for the first time in the Yucatan desert after she was attacked by a pack of wolves, triggered by the instinct of self-preservation. The exoskeleton instantly expanded from the tattoo, instinctively covering and shielding her from attacks she was unaware of that threatened her. She could consciously control its thickness, coverage, and shape, making the carapace resistant to small-arms fire at its thickest. However, one major drawback was that when she was fully armored, any contact with water would paralyze and asphyxiate her, forcing her to retract the armor. (Araña: The Heart of the Spider v1 #2)

Corazon as a gifted student and tinkerer during her time at WebCorps made spider-bolas that was a custom grappling-hook-style equipment for use by herself. The bolas were palm-sized discs with eight red legs capable of gripping objects, and Anya attached cords to them for use in combat and maneuverability. With them, Anya could deploy the bolas to swing through the air as her primary means of web-swinging. They also served a dual function as they could be used as weapons to fight thugs and as grappling hooks to scale buildings. With them, Anya could reuse them to swing, fight opponents at a distance, and trip or bind her enemies. (Araña: The Heart of the Spider v1 #1)

S.H.I.E.L.D. training teaches a variety of skills for on the fieldwork in espionage, containment, and heroism. (Ms. Marvel v2 #7)

Later on, she joined a newly formed team of spider-themed heroes aiding Spider-Man that were known as the Order of the Web. (Amazing Spider-Man: The Sins of Norman Osborn v1 #1)
