Anne Lansing

Anne Lansing was the wealthy socialite wife of George Lansing. Unknown to her husband, Anne was cheating on him with a younger man, whom she had to drive to another town to visit. One night after a bout of lovemaking with her boyfriend, Anne noticed the time and realized she was late getting home. Quickly leaving in her expensive Mercedes-Benz, Anne realized that in order to beat her punctual husband home she would have to exceed the speed limit. In doing so, she accidentally hit a homeless man hitchhiking along the road, carrying a sign saying "Dover." Initially distraught, Anne panicked at the sight of other vehicles approaching and sped away, little suspecting that George was one of the drivers.

Anne drove on, attempting to rationalize what she had done. Stopping at an intersection, she noticed the supposedly dead hitchhiker in her rearview mirror, but when she turned to look he was gone....at least until he appeared alongside the car and "thanked" her for "the ride." She sped off and stopped a little ways down the road, and, looking back, saw the man was gone again, but this time he was on the roof of the Mercedes. In a panic, Anne drove through the forest and knocked the hitchhiker off the roof using a low tree branch, however when she stopped, he appeared again, opening the passenger's side door and attempting to get into the Mercedes.

Anne grabbed a revolver she kept in the glove box and shot the man multiple times, to no noticeable effect (it did appear to cause him pain, however). Finally she kicked him out and backed over him with the car multiple times before driving on. The hitchhiker was underneath the car however and grabbing the Mercedes hood ornament, pulled himself up onto the hood, showing the terrified Anne an accusatory sign saying, "You Killed Me!" Anne responded by driving into a tree, crushing the hitchhiker between the tree and the car and seemingly finishing him off. In the process, she knocked herself unconscious. Later when she awoke, the hitchhiker's body was gone. Deciding it had all been a bad dream borne of guilt, Anne managed to limp the wrecked car the rest of the way home, planning to tell George that she had hit a tree and this was why she was late.

Upon pulling into the garage she noticed George's BMW was not there. He was later than she was (because he had stopped at the scene of the accident several miles back). Even as Anne was lamenting the fact she'd been ahead of her husband the entire time and didn't have to speed, the mutilated hitchhiker, having lost his jaw when Anne slammed him against the tree, reappeared, crawling out from under the car, burbling, "Thanks for the ride, lady!" as he reached in through the car window and seize Anne by the throat...

An unspecified amount of time later, George finally arrived home and found his wife sitting in the Mercedes, dead, the hitchhiker's "Dover" sign hanging around her neck.
