Biography
Bartholomew "Bart" Gallows was born in Sugar Land, Texas and later became a police officer in Houston, Texas. Disillusioned at the law's inability to protect society from crime, he resigned from the force and became a vigilante named 'Americop'. He travels across America and uses a police scanner to track down criminals. He is not above executing the criminals he thinks deserve it. He sometimes takes money from the drug-trafficking criminals he battles. When he does so, he keeps half and donates the rest to drug rehabilitation programs. Americop finds himself in conflict with Captain America while trying to bring down a child exploitation ring. Captain America is appalled by his brutality. Americop's investigation led him to the New Orleans mansion of indestructible munitions magnate Damon Dran. Although initially subdued by a gas grenade attack and imprisoned alongside Captain America, he manages to break free. During the fight he kills several of Dran's mercenaries. During the resulting fight, he shoots down Dran's helicopter. Americop believes Dran died during the crash when the criminal in fact survived. After the super-hero Civil War and Captain America's death, Americop became a target on the Thunderbolts' "Most Wanted" list. Norman Osborn sends Penance and Bullseye to battle Americop, with the secret hope the vigilante will kill them both, as they have not been worth the trouble. Instead, they crash the vigilante's truck and Bullseye causes Penance to unleash his stored-up energy. This fries 80 percent of Americop's synaptic nerve endings.
Bart Gallows, a former Houston police officer who grew disillusioned with the judicial system’s inability to punish criminals effectively. After leaving the force, he began a one-man crusade against crime, traveling across the United States in a heavily armed van outfitted with advanced surveillance equipment and weapons. During his early vigilante activities, Americop hunted down criminals with ruthless efficiency, often dispensing lethal justice without hesitation, leaving a trail of bodies behind him. His initial cases involved tracking drug dealers, gang members, and corrupt officials, and he quickly developed a reputation as a violent and uncompromising figure who operated outside the law. (Captain America v1 #428)
Operating under his own lethal mandate, Americop spent much of his debut patrolling the highways of Texas in his surveillance-heavy semi-truck, where he aggressively intercepted a human trafficking and drug smuggling operation run by the Dealers. His violent methods drew the immediate attention of Captain America, who had arrived in New Orleans to investigate the same criminal network. When the two finally crossed paths, Americop refused to acknowledge the Captain's authority or his pleas for non-lethal restraint, viewing the Avenger’s adherence to civil liberties as a weakness that allowed criminals to thrive. Their ideological clash turned physical as Americop utilized his specialized batons and ruthless combat style to hold his own, making it clear he viewed himself as the law's superior rather than its servant. During the final chaotic raid on the Dealers' warehouse, Americop focused entirely on the permanent elimination of his targets; he deliberately cornered the lead criminal on a high catwalk and, in a chilling display of his 'zero tolerance' policy, stood by and watched as the man fell to his death. Despite Captain America's attempts to stop the carnage and bring the suspects to trial, Americop slipped away into the night, leaving behind a trail of bodies and a deeply disturbed Steve Rogers. (Captain America v1 #428)
Americop eventually crossed paths with Captain America while in pursuit of a network of criminals. Believing himself to be a true patriot enforcing justice where the law had failed, Americop operated with absolute conviction in his mission, even when his methods brought him into direct conflict with established authorities. Captain America, upon discovering Americop’s trail of executions, confronted him, leading to a violent clash between the two. Americop demonstrated both his physical prowess and his access to advanced weaponry during their encounter, holding his own against Steve Rogers long enough to make clear that he was more than just an ordinary vigilante. However, their ideological divide proved irreconcilable, as Captain America opposed Americop’s lethal methods. (Captain America v1 #428)
Americop later died and had his uniform and code name copied by the Americops that were a private security force run by Keane Industries.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Americop was a broad-shouldered male human with a physically imposing frame, reflecting his background as both a police officer and a combat-trained vigilante. His costume consisted of a stylized patriotic uniform colored in red, white, and blue, reminiscent of Captain America’s design, though darker in tone. He wore a blue mask with white eye lenses and a large star emblem across his chest, accompanied by red gloves, boots, and belt. Unlike Captain America’s shield, Americop wielded a high-powered pistol and carried additional firearms in his arsenal, reinforcing the militaristic nature of his design. (Captain America v1 #428)
Americop’s personality was rooted in his uncompromising worldview and rigid moral code, which placed punishment above rehabilitation or justice as understood by the law. He was portrayed as stern, unyielding, and entirely confident in his own sense of righteousness. Where Captain America valued due process and the preservation of life, Americop instead sought finality, killing those he judged guilty. His encounters revealed a man unable to compromise or accept alternative views, embodying the extremes of vigilante justice. (Captain America v1 #428)
Powers and abilities
Physiologically, Americop was a baseline human with no enhanced abilities. His effectiveness stemmed from his training as a former police officer, his physical conditioning, and his skill with firearms and tactics. His strength, stamina, and reflexes were those of a peak-condition man, but his true advantage lay in his extensive weaponry and his armored van, which allowed him to pursue and execute criminals with a reach and efficiency uncommon for ordinary vigilantes. (Captain America v1 #428)
A formidable martial artist and strategist, Americop carries .45 caliber pistols, a baton and a fixed blade tactical knife
He wears bulletproof Kevlar body armor, a ballistic facemask and a customized cap which doubles as a throwing weapon. His costume includes a device that absorbs ambient electrical energy and uses it to increase his strength to low-superhuman levels.
His pickup truck has a roof-mounted lightbar, police siren, public address system and bulletproof armor and windows.
The rights to the Americop persona were later purchased by Keane Industries who used it for a private policing initiative that became the basis for the Americops. (Captain America: Sam Wilson v1 #10)
