Biography

Jemaine Szardos was the blonde haired daughter of Margali Szardos who was a sorceress that walked the winding road and had an older brother named Stefan Szardos. Her mother came to adopt a young Mutant infant that was taken from the arms of his dying mother. The boy was named Kurt Wagner to be raised by the tribe of Gypsies under the care of the witch-queen. During this time, the three children were known to had grown up to be close friends. (Uncanny X-Men Annual v1 #4)

Jimaine did not care about sorcery at all and still opted to go with Kurt but, on the evening they wanted to leave. Margali, disguised as the demon Belasco, killed the artist who took her place in the show. Believing that actually she was meant to be killed by the 'demon', Jimaine decided to stay with her mother and hone her magical skills. (Excalibur v1 #-1)

She lived in Winzeldorf, Germany, with her family in a traveling circus, which also housed the young Kurt. She acted primarily in a supportive capacity, appearing in flashbacks that revealed her close relationship with Kurt before he was taken in by the X-Men. Her protective nature toward Kurt established the foundation of their bond. (Giant-Size X-Men v1 #4) Amanda resurfaced years later in America, where she had taken the guise of a flight attendant and adopted the name Amanda Sefton. During this period, she rekindled her relationship with Kurt, both as his foster sister and romantic partner, a tension often noted by those around them. Her involvement with Kurt and the X-Men deepened when Margali attacked the team with the Winding Way, a mystical path of ascension in sorcery that Margali walked. Amanda’s magical nature was revealed more clearly when she aided in explaining and confronting her mother’s actions, though she still presented herself primarily as a civilian ally at this stage. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #98) As her role expanded, Amanda demonstrated greater aptitude for sorcery, which made her a direct participant in conflicts involving magical threats. During Nightcrawler’s tenure with Excalibur, Amanda took a more proactive role in combat situations, occasionally teleporting alongside Kurt while supplementing the team with magical defenses and mystical insight. Her contributions were particularly significant in battles against extradimensional forces, where her lineage as Margali’s daughter positioned her as both an asset and a target for enemies. (Excalibur v1 #4)

One day Margali returned to avenge the murder of her son Stefan and she put Nightcrawler into an illusionary hell she created, based on Dante’s 'Inferno'. With the help of Dr. Strange, the X-Men followed and, as they finally reached the last circle of hell, Jimaine materialized and pointed the way towards Margali. She spoke on Kurt’s behalf and, with the Dr. Strange’s Eye of Agamotto, Kurt proved that Stefan had become a serial killer. Trying to stop him, Kurt had accidentally killed him in battle. Margali forgave him and left, while Jimaine revealed that she had been with Kurt the whole time, posing as Amanda. (Uncanny X-Men Annual v1 #4)

Her mother later wanted Jimaine to receive further instruction in the mystic arts. Thus, she looked to make herself the new disciple of the Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange. When the Genghis spread the word that Clea had left Dr. Strange and was looking for a new disciple, Amanda was one of many would-be applicants that approached Dr. Strange for this prestigious position and was very angry when he did not give it to her, even though she reminded him of her birthright - first born daughter to Margali Szardos. Three days later, Dr. Strange held a seminar with all the aspirants to inform them that he did not want a new disciple. However, he refused and easily bested Jimaine when she attacked him leading to her mother Margali arriving after being angered at what happened to her daughter. Eventually, Dr. Strange detected that something was influencing both Amanda and Margali. After ascertaining that it was the wand, he took it from Margali, who reverted to her true appearance at its loss. The snapping of the wand ended the spell completley. Amanda explained to Dr. Strange that the wand corrupted her mother and it was even having some influence over her. After Margali recovered at Dr. Strange’s home, Amanda thanked Dr. Strange for his help and took her mother to her apartment. (Doctor Strange v2 #57)

Seeing how competition among magicians was so cutthroat, Amanda promised Kurt she was not practicing magic anymore, as she felt it was better not to. However, when she felt like something happened to space itself, Amanda felt bound to break her promise and began searching for a reason why. Nightcrawler and Amanda were due to go out on a date and, when he learned she was using her powers to find out what was happening, he told her to make sure she was careful. Amanda warned Kurt that there was trans-dimensional magic around her apartment but, before she could tell him not to teleport, he did so and Kurt ended up in a different dimension, Crystalium, where he encountered Crystar the Crystal Warrior. While Kurt adventured in this new world, Amanda was worried sick about him but, after several hours, Kurt was able to teleport himself back to Earth, bringing Amanda a gift — jewelry that Ika of Crystalium wore. Amanda recognized them and asked him where he got them, and in usual fashion teased Kurt about being such a ladies man. (The Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior v1 #6)

Together the two women traveled to Muir Island to ask Moira about the team’s whereabouts, only to find the island was under attack by the Reavers. Amanda saved Banshee, who had been shot, from drowning in the ocean by transforming into a mer-creature, diving after him and teleporting him to Moira’s lab. She agreed to help the cyborgs with her magical powers until the Reavers eventually retreated, though the incident also showed Amanda the limitations of her powers. When trying to conjure up the standard X-uniform for the people present, she utterly failed and the cyborgs were only partially affected by her spells, as the iron in their mechanical bodyparts counteracted magic. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #254)

Much later, in need of her magical abilities, Nightcrawler called his former girlfriend to aid Excalibur. For dramatic reasons, Amanda chose to adopt the codename Daytripper, kind of playing on Kurt’s codename of 'Nightcrawler' and presented herself in a new costume. Once familiarized with the problem at hand, Amanda did the best she could to help Meggan and Rachel locate the lost Captain Britain in the timestream. However, when they made contact, they only succeeded in exchanging Brian for Rachel, who entered the timestream in his place to emerge in some farfetched future. (Excalibur v1 #75)

Jemaine later determined that various evil powers would continue to seek out the Soulsword and decided to give it to Nightcrawler for safekeeping. She was later attacked by Nightmare but was saved by her mother Margali. It was then that she aided Nightcrawler against the demon Hive who warned the Szardos family that a war was brewing and that the Soulsword was at the centre of it all. (Nightcrawler v3 #12)

Limbo was then attacked by Belasco who forced Amanda to flee after he became more powerful than before and without the Soulsword she could not stop his invasion. (New X-Men v2 #37)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Amanda Sefton was depicted as a young Caucasian woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, often shown with long, flowing hairstyles. In her guise as a flight attendant, she wore standard uniforms, though later depictions had her dressed in civilian outfits more befitting her connection to Kurt and the mystical world. When she fully embraced her magical identity, she donned sorcerous robes and costumes, reflecting her heritage as Margali’s daughter and later as wielder of the Soul Sword. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #98) She came to take the name Daytripper cause it sounded more dramatic than using her real name though she admitted that it was only a working code name. (Excalibur v1 #75)

In personality, Amanda was consistently portrayed as compassionate, protective, and loyal, especially toward Kurt. Her early appearances emphasized her kindness and warmth, though this was tempered by her pragmatic awareness of the dangers that accompanied both Kurt’s life with the X-Men and her own mystical lineage. As her magical power grew, her sense of responsibility deepened, and she became increasingly committed to confronting supernatural threats, even when this placed her at great personal risk. (Excalibur v1 #4)

The time of banter she had with Kurt was one shared amongst the oldest of friends. (Excalibur v1 #75)

Powers and abilities

In powers and abilities, Amanda was a human sorceress descended from a long magical lineage. Her initial powers were limited spellcasting, including defensive wards, illusions, and basic energy manipulation. Over time, her mastery of the mystical arts expanded, granting her proficiency in teleportation, elemental manipulation, and banishment of demons. She eventually assumed the mantle of Magik, taking control of the Soul Sword and the domain of Limbo, further amplifying her powers and establishing her as one of Marvel’s prominent mystical figures. (Excalibur v1 #83)

She claimed that few places were off-limits to a person of her magical ability. (Excalibur v1 #75) Jimaine was shown to be capable of using the flames of a candle as a medium through which she could teleport to a location. (Doctor Strange v2 #57)

Jimaine was able to fire out bolts of bedevilment though this was considered a common attack that could be easily bested by a true mystic. (Doctor Strange v2 #57)
