Biography

Benjamin Lockwood

Benjamin Lockwood began his activities as Agent Liberty after becoming disillusioned with both the U.S. government and its political climate, leading him to join the paramilitary Sons of Liberty before eventually operating independently. In his first appearances, he acted as a masked vigilante equipped with advanced weaponry, including an armored battle suit and retractable energy blades. He patrolled urban areas and inserted himself into conflicts involving government overreach, terrorist activities, and superhuman intervention, often clashing with both criminals and established heroes who questioned his methods. (Superman v2 #60) During one of his earliest missions, Liberty engaged in direct combat against a group of terrorists attempting to disrupt a federal facility. Using the offensive and defensive systems built into his suit, he neutralized their weapons and incapacitated multiple assailants with precision strikes. While conducting this mission, Liberty demonstrated not only his combat training but also his distrust of the government’s ability to handle such threats without independent oversight. His tactics drew Superman’s attention, resulting in a confrontation between the two, though Liberty focused on completing his mission rather than escalating their conflict. (Superman v2 #60) As his activities escalated, Liberty operated in Metropolis, Washington, D.C., and other high-profile cities, targeting groups he considered corrupt or dangerous to the United States. On one occasion, he intercepted a government convoy carrying experimental weapons, believing they would eventually be misused, and dismantled the operation singlehandedly. His actions often placed him at odds with Superman and other heroes, yet he maintained his resolve that his vigilante activities were justified. While not aligned with traditional criminals, his unpredictability and radical patriotism made him a volatile figure in the superhero community. (Superman v2 #61)

In the beginning, Lockwood used his Agent Liberty guise to help the Sons' stated cause of overturning the current governmental regime, which brought him into conflict with Superman. Over time, Lockwood soon began to lose his faith in the Sons of Liberty when their actions turned more extreme. His loyalty to the Sons ended when the Sons tasked Lockwood to assassinate their founder Charles Holcraft, who was captured by the authorities, from testifying before a senate committee and then ordered to eliminate politician Pete Ross, who was forced against his will to participate in Holcraft's death, for being a loose end. (Superman v2 #69) However, Lockwood defied the Sons' orders and turned on the group, killing their key members Jay Harriman and Ronald Kramer, and forwarded classified information on the Sons and deleting his own name and participation to Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent. (Adventures of Superman v1 #492)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Agent Liberty was a white male who was distinguished by his armored suit, designed with patriotic motifs. His costume featured a metallic helmet with a stylized eagle crest, a blue and gold bodysuit reinforced with armored plating, and a flowing cape that accentuated his militaristic silhouette. The suit incorporated retractable energy blades mounted on his forearms, serving as both weapons and defensive tools. His overall presentation reflected his nationalistic theme and his role as a self-styled defender of liberty. (Superman v2 #60)

Lockwood’s personality in his earliest depictions was driven by radical patriotism, cynicism toward government institutions, and a deep frustration with political corruption. He operated with unwavering conviction in his ideals, often speaking in uncompromising terms about freedom and justice as he interpreted them. Unlike Superman’s idealism, Liberty’s approach was grounded in suspicion and aggression, with a belief that only vigilant individuals like himself could preserve American values. His interactions with other heroes often displayed his stubbornness and unwillingness to compromise his worldview. (Superman v2 #61)

Powers and abilities

Agent Liberty possessed no innate superpowers but relied on peak human conditioning, military training, and his advanced suit. The armor provided enhanced protection against firearms and energy weapons, while the retractable energy blades allowed him to cut through conventional materials with ease. His helmet included advanced communication systems, enabling him to monitor government frequencies and coordinate his strikes. Together, these features made him a formidable combatant capable of standing against armed groups and holding his ground against metahuman opponents. (Superman v2 #60)

Agent Liberty is highly skilled in military tactics, hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship. His high-tech battle suit can generate a force-field of energy capable of deflecting bullets and houses weapons such as retractable gauntlet blades. He wears a jetpack that allows flight and was able to summon attack helicopters and other assistance from the Sons of Liberty.
