History
Abstergo Industries was an organization that was created by remnants of the Knights Templar during the times of the Crusades so that they could continue their war against the Assassin Brotherhood into the modern age. It was founded in 1937 where it was set to accomplish the purpose of the Templars through capitalism and scientific means.
During the first era of its modern operations, Abstergo Industries functioned as a clinical and shadowy corporate front for the Templar Order, primarily focusing on the acquisition of Isu artifacts through the coercive extraction of genetic memories. Under the cold leadership of Dr Warren Vidic at a secure facility in Italy, the company launched the Animus Project, which sought to map the ancestral history of captured subjects to locate various Pieces of Eden lost to time. The initiative reached a critical turning point with the abduction of Desmond Miles, known as Subject 17, who was an ancestor of the assassin Altaïr whose DNA held the key to the locations of multiple Apples of Eden hidden during the Crusades and the Renaissance. Abstergo Industries identified and kidnapped Desmond Miles, a runaway bartender whom they had flagged as Subject 17 due to his elite Assassin lineage. Operating out of a sterile, high-security laboratory in Italy, the corporation’s primary objective was the forced extraction of memories from Desmond’s ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, during the Third Crusade. Under the aggressive supervision of Dr Warren Vidic and his assistant Lucy Stillman, Abstergo utilized the Animus to bypass Desmond’s conscious resistance, searching for a specific memory that revealed the location of a powerful Isu artifact. This period was defined by Abstergo’s total disregard for Desmond’s physical and mental well-being, as Vidic frequently pushed the synchronization process to dangerous limits to meet a strict corporate deadline.
As the synchronization with Altaïr progressed, Abstergo focused their historical investigation on the year 1191, specifically tracking the movements of the Apple of Eden after the Siege of Acre. The corporation meticulously monitored the memories of the nine high-profile assassinations carried out by Altaïr, realizing that each target was actually a member of the historical Templar Order working toward the same goals as the modern company. The climax of this research phase occurred when Altaïr defeated his grandmaster, Al Mualim, causing the Apple to project a holographic world map. Abstergo’s technicians immediately recorded the coordinates of dozens of other Pieces of Eden hidden across the globe, effectively achieving their primary intelligence goal and rendering Desmond’s continued cooperation theoretically unnecessary. The final phase of the first game’s events centered on the immediate aftermath of the map’s discovery, as Abstergo prepared for the imminent launch of Project Eye-Abstergo. With the coordinates in hand, the company dispatched recovery teams to various global sites to secure the artifacts needed to power a mind-control satellite intended to subjugate the human race on December 21, 2012. Despite an extraction attempt by modern-day Assassins that resulted in the deaths of several Abstergo security teams, Vidic maintained control over the facility and ordered Desmond to be kept alive for further 'clinical observation'. The era concluded with Desmond, now afflicted by the Bleeding Effect, discovering the "blood scrawlings" left by his predecessor, Subject 16, which revealed that Abstergo was part of a global conspiracy that spanned millennia and was far closer to achieving total victory than the Assassins had feared.
