History
A.E.G.I.S. was a federal agency established within the United States of America in the wake of the rise of superpowered beings. It was said that the government had created the organization to deal with the threat of supervillains.
The Flag Five were a high-profile superhero group who had worked closely with A.E.G.I.S.
What followed as a tragedy that resulted in the massacre of the Flag Five superhero team. They were reportedly killed by the notorious supervillain known as The Terror. This event was a defining moment in the city's history, causing widespread trauma and leading to the eventual collapse and abandonment of the local AEGIS operations. The agency's failure to prevent the deaths of such a prominent team, or perhaps the sheer scale of the incident, resulted in the closure of its field office for several years, leaving a power vacuum in the city's superhero governance and enforcement. With the Terror seemingly killed, the need for superheroes began to end and the local A.E.G.I.S. office was even closed down.
After the defeat of the Terror, the local A.E.G.I.S. branch was re-opened with efforts being made to organise the superhero community again. Agent Rathbone sought to also find prospective candidates for a new incarnation of the Flag Five. After years of being a defunct entity in "The City," AEGIS re-established its presence and resumed operations. The agency reopened its local branch, complete with a modern facility and a "Heroes' Lounge" that provided amenities and access to a criminal database for registered superheroes. The return of AEGIS meant that superheroes like the Tick and Arthur could formally interact with a governing body, and they were even invited to tour the facility and take the hero test.
Overview
In appearance, A.E.G.I.S. was a high-tech federal agency, responsible for working with superheroes and keeping a database of all active heroes. The agency was responsible for enforcing the 28th Amendment and keeping a database of all active superheroes. The agency's personnel typically wore standard government-issue tactical gear or business attire within their well-equipped facilities which featured modern amenities and access to a criminal database. The agents and the organization itself had a structured, bureaucratic aesthetic. Its core employee base and field divisions consisted entirely of adult human bureaucrats, tactical officers, and specialized research scientists. They featured standard bipedal human physical frames that varied in build and stature across separate administrative tiers, with individual field personnel maintaining heavily conditioned physical forms to handle high-stakes counter-terrorism operations. The organization adapted its visual presence to emphasize a highly standardized, corporate, and governmental aesthetic rather than flamboyant superhero attire. Their garments consisted of standard government-issue tactical combat gear for active field agents or conservative business suits and white lab coats for indoor research personnel. The agency expanded its visual identity through its state-of-the-art facilities, which featured a structured, sterile design housing a modern Heroes' Lounge, advanced scientific break rooms, and prominent wall surfaces decorated with the official geometric A.E.G.I.S. shield insignia crest.
They relied on their comprehensive institutional training and extensive bureaucratic frameworks to execute highly coordinated public safety operations, manage large-scale metahuman tracking databases, and coordinate international superhero licensing. They did not initially possess innate organic superpowers, supernatural magic, or passive energy projection capabilities, depending instead on state-of-the-art defensive technology, vast federal funding, and heavily structured legal protocols. Their specialized technology allowed separate research units to process advanced metahuman DNA testing kits, operate high-tech data surveillance grids to monitor active supervillains, and run comprehensive combat simulation rooms to rank registered heroes into specific Category designations. Their primary capabilities allowed them to issue official superhero registration numbers, dictate legal operational boundaries for local crimefighters, and maintain an independent, highly disciplined network of qualified federal agents capable of overriding standard civilian police jurisdictions.
AEGIS was supposed to use advanced technology and skilled agents to complete missions but they are often weighed down by bureaucracy and procedures. It was equipped with state-of-the-art technology and had dozens of qualified agents. The agency reached out to the public to report any disturbances on 1-800-52-AEGIS.
It referred to superpowered beings as a Category with them dividing such individuals into rankings. The lowest was a Category 0 that were individuals with no superpowers. Once registered, a superhero were provided their own registration number to identify them in the organization.
Among their creations were a fleet of DB X12 craft that were boats with the ability to fly. Each were equipped with a highly advanced artificial intelligence that was designed to help the pilot.
The AEGIS field office in The City was eventually shut down after the deaths of the Flag Five. AEGIS reestablished its presence and resumed operations within The City
