He traveled to the fortified municipality of Tokyo-3 after receiving a sudden, mandatory summons from his estranged biological father, NERV Commander Gendo Ikari. His arrival precisely coincided with a catastrophic state of emergency, as a giant, hostile extraterrestrial entity known as the Third Angel, Sachiel, launched a devastating assault that easily bypassed the conventional military defense networks of the United Nations. Left stranded in the middle of the active combat zone, Shinji Ikari was successfully extracted by Captain Misato Katsuragi, who navigated through the heavy missile fire to transport him directly into the subterranean geofront facility housing NERV Headquarters. Upon arrival, his expectations of a parental reunion were instantly shattered when Gendo Ikari coldly revealed that the teenager had been brought there strictly to serve as a biological component, ordering him to immediately pilot the untested biomechanical weapon Evangelion Unit-01 to combat the monster. Terrified by the staggering responsibility and deeply resentful of being exploited as a mere tactical tool, Shinji Ikari fiercely refused the directive until he witnessed a heavily bandaged, severely injured backup pilot, Rei Ayanami, being wheeled out to assume the dangerous mission in his stead. Moved by her physical suffering and resolving not to run away from the crisis, he relented and allowed himself to be submerged into the cockpit's LCL fluid.
