Dr. Evazan
Dr. Evazan was an insane human medical practicioner who boasted having the death sentence in twelve systems. He tried to pick a fight with Luke Skywalker while in the Mos Eisley Cantina. Obi-Wan Kenobi intervened however and attempted to buy Evazan a drink, but the Doctor and his friend Ponda Baba pulled blasters on the well-intentioned Jedi. Obi-Wan responded by igniting his lightsaber and slashing Evazan across the torso with it.
Expanded Universe
Also known as Dr. Death and simply the Doctor, Dr. Evazan's face was horribly scarred by a shot from bounty hunter Jodo Kast's blaster. After the encounter with Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan in the cantina, Evazan and Ponda Baba fled Tatooine. Evazan tried to replace Baba's severed arm with a cybernetic one but the procedure failed. Later, a botched mind transfer experiment resulted in Baba's death. Much later, Boba Fett tailed Evazan to the planet Necropolis where the Doctor was experimenting with giving life to the dead. Here, Evazan's experiments were stopped by Zak and Tash Arranda and their Uncle Hoole. Evazan was killed but injected himself with his life-giving formula he used to create zombies. Later, when the antidote to the formula was used to destroy Evazan's undead army, the Doctor died as well, this time for good.
Comments
In the original script for A New Hope, Dr. Evazan was identified as simply being "a grubby human." In the radio dramatization of the film he was given the name "Roofoo." It wasn't until 1989 when West End Games' Star Wars guide gave him the name "Dr. Evazan" and his backstory as a mad doctor. Retconning on the part of various authors explained that Roofoo was one of Evazan's aliases.
