Biography

Kung Jin

Kung Jin is a member of the Kung family and the younger cousin of the current Kung Lao. After his cousin is killed by Shao Kahn, Jin becomes angry at Raiden for allowing his death. He becomes a skilled archer and thief, and does not join the Shaolin Monks because of his homosexuality. Twenty years after Kahn’s defeat, Jin sneaks into the Sky Temple to steal a family heirloom that was given to Raiden. When the god of thunder catches him as he is about to escape, he takes the statue away from the thief and tells him that the Kung family honored him with it as a gift. Jin openly blames Raiden for Lao’s death, angering the god and causing a fight. After Jin wins, he walks away but is stopped by Raiden, and figures that the god wanted him to attack to release his anger. Raiden tells Jin to go the Wu Shi Academy and become a Shaolin monk. Jin states that he cannot, fearing they will reject him because he is a homosexual. But the Elder Gods assure him that the academy cares about what is in his heart. Jin tries to argue that it is too late for him, but Raiden gives him the heirloom and replies that it is never too late. Afterwards, Jin trained at the academy and becomes a Shaolin monk like his cousin. Five years later, he was chosen to become part of a Special Forces' team - handpicked by Johnny Cage - with Special Forces' operatives Cassie Cage and Jacqui Briggs, and Takeda Takahashi of the Shirai Ryu. After they hear the story about how Cage defeated Shinnok and helped contain the Elder God inside his own amulet, Cage gives them an assignment: to ensure the allegiance of Grandmaster Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei to Earthrealm's defenses.

In the aftermath, he stood inside a highly secure, high-tech communications hub managed by the Special Forces to receive a tactical operational briefing from Johnny Cage. Assigned to a newly formed, next-generation strike team alongside Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs, and Takahashi Takeda, Kung Jin listened with visible skepticism as Johnny detailed his ancient ancestry tracing back to a Mediterranean war cult. Seeking to gauge his new squad leader's biological lineage, Kung Jin openly questioned Cassie regarding her potential ability to summon her father's signature green kinetic aura or if the supernatural trait had entirely skipped a generation. His sharp comments were quickly intercepted by Takeda, who verbally commanded him to settle down and take it easy. Kung Jin held his position as the group finalized their local parameters, preparing to deploy on an off-world journey to the dangerous realm of Outworld to act as covert emissaries under an official diplomatic seal issued by Lord Raiden.

Once they reach the destination, they are about to invade the temple, but Sub-Zero and some Lin Kuei warriors leave it at the same time to meditate. In a rash manner, Kung Jin asks for Sub-Zero's cooperation, but the Grandmaster reminds them that they are not welcome and demands that they state their intentions, just as more Lin Kuei come to surround the young warriors. Cassie tries to cool down the mood, but once again, Jin defies the whole clan, which unchains a battle between the team and the clan. Eventually, Jin tries to face Sub-Zero by himself, but falls right into his feint. Sub-Zero advices the young Shaolin that he should help his companions instead of constantly mocking of his superiors, to which Jin replies saying he will remember that, once he finds an actual superior. After being defeated by Sub-Zero, who is unamused by his false bravado, he is tied up along with his companions. Turns out that the fight against the Lin Kuei happens to be just a training exercise created by both Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero, who advises Cassie and the others that until they function as a team, they will fall short. Tension ensues after the beatdown, as the team looks down on Jin for his foul attitude with the situation. They then get a message from the HQ regarding the Outworlders' exodus to Earthrealm. Once they arrive to the HQ, they find Sonya Blade, Raiden and Kenshi questioning the Outworlder Li Mei, who brought her people from Sun Do to Earthrealm to ensure their safety from the battle between Kotal Kahn's army and Mileena's insurgency, who has Shinnok's amulet in her possession. General Blade then orders the team to go to Outworld have a conference with Kotal Kahn regarding these news.

Once they arrive at Outworld, Cassie mentioned that she thought the sky there was purple, something that Kung Jin contradicted, thanks to his studies about Outworld in the Shaolin Archives. After once again questioning Cassie's leadership skills, Takeda reminded them about the mission and seizes to ask about why Outworld did not help Earthrealm in the Netherrealm war against Quan Chi and his team of revenants. Jin then answered that Outworld was not exactly their ally, and it was only stipulated in the Reiko Accords that there would not be any aggressions between Earthrealm and Outworld. Erron Black was close and listened to their conversation, which made him demand them to state their business. Cassie asks to talk with the emperor, but Black is uninterested in taking them to his encounter. Jin then tried to make a scheme with him, proposing that the gunslinger takes them as hostages to him, which would be something worthy of a raise on Black's paycheck. After some thought, Black escorted them to bring them to the emperor. Eventually, they witnessed an execution of an Outworlder, whose crime was the petty theft of bread. Kung Jin ran to aid in the criminal's breakout, something that caused panic between the public, and then fought and defeated Erron Black. Then Ferra/Torr come to immobilize the young Earthrealmers one by one. Once they reach Jin, they engage in kombat with him, but were defeated. Then, D'Vorah came to impose order and remembered the Earthrealmers that they interfered in Outworld's justice affairs - an act that was punishable by death. However, D'Vorah would first bring Kotal Kahn to consult him. While they awaited for the emperor, his angry companions demanded to know what Jin was thinking to act that way. Jin defended not all thieves are irredeemable, telling them his story.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Kung Jin was a young adult human male of Chinese descent who possessed a lean, athletic physical build optimized for complex gymnastics, Shaolin martial arts, and high-precision archery. In his base state serving as a newly inducted defender of Earthrealm, his uniform design was explicitly inspired by traditional Mongolian nomadic archers, featuring a layered brown and teal-accented tunic reinforced with light leather shoulder pauldrons, metal forearm bracers, and matching high-top combat boots. His dark hair was tied back tightly to keep his vision entirely unobstructed during high-speed targeting sequences, leaving his facial features completely unmasked and exposed to the public. Fastened securely across his back was a massive, uniquely engineered convertible bow system, paired with a large tactical quiver positioned over his shoulder to store his specialized, elemental-infused trick arrows.

As a child, Kung Jin admired his cousin Kung Lao and considered him a hero. After his cousin's death, the Kung family lost their family fortunes and moved to the United States of America. Because of this, Jin became a thief and blamed Raiden for the death of his cousin. However, after meeting the Thunder God, he let go of his resentment and trained under the White Lotus Society, who Jin originally thought would not accept him because of his homosexuality. Having learned much of Outworld and the ways of the Shaolin, Jin now fights to protect Earthrealm in honor of his family.

Powers and abilities

Kung Jin was a born member of the human race originating from Earthrealm who possessed an elite, sacred bloodline as a direct descendant of the legendary Earth hero, the Great Kung Lao. On a basic feats level, his rigorous Shaolin education and hard-edged streetwise background provided him with peak-human physical attributes, extreme acrobatic agility, and structural combat reflexes that allowed him to seamlessly weave weapon strikes into close-quarters martial encounters. His primary individual power on the page manifested through his absolute mastery over a highly specialized convertible bow and arrow system. This advanced mechanic allowed Kung Jin to utilize his bow as a heavy, close-range bo staff to batter adult combatants into submission, while instantaneously transforming the frame back into a functional ranged weapon capable of launching precision trick arrows. Furthermore, Kung Jin possessed advanced tactical skills in urban stealth infiltration, professional pickpocketing, and environmental tracking gained during his past lifestyle as an independent thief, enabling him to bypass sophisticated security systems completely undetected.

Kung Jin was a human martial artist with no inherent superhuman powers, but his abilities were honed to extraordinary levels through Shaolin training and battlefield experience. His signature weapon—a collapsible bow imbued with mystic energy—allowed him to channel his chi into explosive arrow shots, energy bursts, and kinetic strikes. Jin’s fighting style blended acrobatics with precision marksmanship, making him one of the most versatile members of the new Earthrealm defense team. He possessed exceptional agility, reflexes, and accuracy, capable of firing arrows mid-leap or redirecting shots to strike multiple enemies. In close combat, Jin utilized techniques derived from Shaolin kung fu, incorporating rapid strikes, counters, and sweeps with staff-like movements from his weapon. His mastery of chi also granted him enhanced focus and energy projection, enabling him to channel inner power into powerful energy-infused attacks.
