Dorothy Spinner was adopted as a child by a couple living in rural Mid-western America. Her childhood was made difficult by her facial deformity which provoke bullying and repulsion from most other people that she encountered, she was subsequently unable to go to school as her fellow children were afraid of her. In her isolation Dorothy developed many intricate imaginary friends to keep her company that were also somehow able to teach her how to read and write. Over time Dorothy came to realise that her friends were no longer imaginary and had in fact come to life. Eventually some of the imaginary friends started to scare Dorothy with grisly fairy tales and so she shot them with an imaginary gun. (Doom Patrol v2 #25)

At this London Carnival in 1927, Niles finds himself in the audience to confirm that the “Monkey-faced girl” attraction was his daughter. What he also bares witness to in the process is how The Candlemaker, one of Dorothy's most powerful imaginary friends killed everyone else at the carnival that night. A couple of years later, Niles sends Dorothy to hide inside Danny, who was “a smart alley” at the time, and set out on his journey to gain immortality. All so that he would always be around to protect his daughter from others and from herself. His investigation eventually led him to Paraguay, where he stole a talisman in the form of a rabbit’s leg that provided him with immortality. Unfortunately, this was not a permanent solution, so he began to test out his unethical experiments of immortality on what is now the team.
