Biography

Origin

The monstrous Validus in Adventure Comics v1 #353.

Validus

In the late 30th century, the Legion of Super-Heroes members Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl gave birth to twin children. Following an epic event known as the Great Darkness Saga, the New God known as Darkseid kidnapped Garridan Ranzz at the instant of his birth. He then sent the newborn backwards in time ten years, cursed with a monstrous body and practically mindless. His child-like persona made Validus extremely susceptible to persuasion - a handicap that Fatal Five member Tharok took advantage of at every given opportunity. It was Darkseid's plan that the mutated child would one day grow up and kill his own parents.

Validus first appeared as a monstrous enemy of the Legion of Super-Heroes when he was unleashed by the villainous Time Trapper as part of the Fatal Five. He confronted the Legion in a direct, violent assault, relying on his enormous strength to overpower multiple Legionnaires at once. His body radiated bursts of mental lightning, which scattered his opponents and prevented them from organizing their defenses effectively. Despite his limited intelligence and lack of spoken communication, his destructive capacity and sheer durability forced the Legion to devote their combined efforts to restraining him. His rampage demonstrated why the Fatal Five, though hastily assembled, were an immediate and existential threat to the team’s survival. (Adventure Comics v1 #352) Validus then joined the Fatal Five in their attempt to conquer Earth by force. He fought relentlessly against the Legionnaires who stood in defense of the planet, his towering form cutting through defensive lines with brute force. His mental lightning played a decisive role in breaking down organized resistance, rendering Legionnaires such as Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy vulnerable to physical follow-up attacks. Though the Fatal Five functioned as a unit under the Persuader and Tharok’s coordination, Validus was deployed as their strongest weapon, sent into the thickest fighting to devastate enemies with little concern for collateral destruction. Even when struck by powerful Legionnaire attacks, he withstood punishment that would have felled most other foes. (Adventure Comics v1 #353)

Validus returned once again to fight the Legion in a direct confrontation where the Fatal Five sought to extend their dominance beyond Earth. His massive size and destructive energy made him the vanguard of their campaign, and his actions consistently created openings for his teammates to exploit. Legionnaires attempted coordinated maneuvers to contain him, but his unpredictable bursts of mental lightning disrupted their formations and endangered even their strongest members. Though he lacked strategy or subtlety, his sheer persistence and overwhelming durability forced the Legion into desperate countermeasures. He remained a constant and nearly unstoppable obstacle in battle, illustrating why he was regarded as the most dangerous member of the Fatal Five. (Adventure Comics v1 #354)

Some time later, an entity known as the Sun-Eater threatened to consume Earth's sun, thus destroying the galaxy. Desperate to stop the Sun-Eater's efforts, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes recruited the aid of the Fatal Five. They discovered that Validus was among their ranks, but had no idea of his true parental heritage. The Fatal Five reluctantly agreed to help the Legion, and the Sun-Eater's efforts were averted. Validus remained a loyal member of the Fatal Five, always ready to do Tharok's bidding. During one memorable altercation with the Legion, Validus killed Lyle Norg, the original Invisible Kid.

Post-Zero Hour

He was originally genetically engineered specifically to combat a Sun-Eater. (Legionnaires v1 #34)

Overview

Personality and attributes

A powerful foe of the Legion in Superman v3 #40.

In appearance, Validus was an enormous humanoid giant whose form towered over his opponents. His body was heavily muscled, with purple skin that marked him as something far removed from normal humanity. His head was abnormally enlarged and translucent, allowing his brain to be visibly seen through the cranium. His eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and his mouth was twisted into a permanent grimace. He wore only metallic restraints and bonds on his arms and legs, which suggested imprisonment or control, but no traditional costume or armor. His imposing physical presence was as terrifying as the destructive power he wielded. (Adventure Comics v1 #352)

Validus displayed almost no capacity for communication or reasoning. He was driven by instinct and unleashed in battle as a living weapon. He did not speak, negotiate, or show signs of strategy, acting entirely through brute force. His behavior reflected rage and aggression, expressed through destructive attacks and unrelenting assaults on his enemies. While other members of the Fatal Five engaged in dialogue or scheming, Validus remained silent and violent, functioning as their most fearsome and uncontrollable force. (Adventure Comics v1 #352)

Powers and abilities

Supercriminal of the 31st century in Legion of Super-heroes v7 #16.

Physiologically, Validus was a massive, super-strong humanoid whose body granted him durability beyond that of most known beings. His musculature allowed him to battle entire groups of Legionnaires at once without tiring, while his translucent head housed a brain that emitted destructive bursts of mental lightning. These energy discharges struck at random, bypassing defenses and overwhelming opponents even at a distance. His physiology rendered him immune to most conventional attacks, and his towering size meant that he physically dwarfed nearly every opponent he faced, giving him both reach and raw power that few could challenge directly. (Adventure Comics v1 #352)

Notes

  • Validus was created by Jim Shooter where he made his first appearance in Adventure Comics v1 #352 (January, 1967).

Alternate Versions

In other media

Television

  • In Legion of Super Heroes, Validus appeared in the setting of the animated television series. He was shown as a member of the Fatal Five who was vulnerable to telepathy, as Saturn Girl mind-controlled him in the pilot episode "Man of Tomorrow". In Season Two, Validus was eventually recruited by Imperiex when he released him. Imperiex appears to perfectly understand Validus' seemingly incoherent grunting as seen in "Message in a Bottle" when he answers the brute's question as if he had spoken clearly. In the two-part episode "Dark Victory," Validus was turned into computer data by Brainiac when trying to help Imperiex who got impaled by Brainiac.

Films

  • In Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, Validus appeared in the setting of the animated film. He and Emerald Empress were imprisoned on Oa in the present because the Green Lantern Corps was no longer active in the 31st Century to contain villains like them.
