Video games
- In Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, the Rutans appeared in the setting of "The Gunpowder Plot". The Rutans possessed a massive mothership that had been buried beneath the foundations of the House of Lords since the 13th century. It was revealed that this vessel contained two devastating doomsday weapons known as 'genetic bombs', each capable of completely annihilating the Sontaran race. Furthermore, the game established that the Rutans utilized indestructible control rods as essential components of their ship’s technology. The existence of a '14th plotter' in the historical Gunpowder Plot was also introduced—a shapeshifting Rutan who had infiltrated the human conspiracy to advance the Host’s agenda. They attempted to manipulate the historical events of 1605 to facilitate their escape from Earth. Posing as Lady Winters, a Rutan operative integrated herself into Guy Fawkes' circle, intending to use the kinetic energy from the gunpowder explosion to launch her damaged mothership. Throughout the conflict, they engaged in violent skirmishes with a Sontaran squad that had arrived to seize their doomsday technology. Their plans were ultimately thwarted when the Eleventh Doctor recovered both genetic bombs and reprogrammed one to target the Rutans instead. By giving one weapon to each side without identifying which was which, he forced the Rutans into a tactical stalemate, compelling them to abandon their mission and retreat from London.
Novels
- In Doctor Who: Shakedown, the Rutans appeared in the setting of the 1995 Virgin Books novel adaptation that was written by Terrance Dicks. They were said to possess a hive-mind that was coordinated by a Queen who lived on their well-defended homeworld and without her influence then the Rutan Host would fall apart. Their biotechnology made them capable of uplifting other species to sentience which they did to the planet Sentarion whose inhabitants worshipped the Rutans as 'the Shining Ones'. The organic nature of their technology was also noted as being one of the big differences between them and the Sontarans.
