Biography

R. Dorothy Wayneright (Japanese: アール・ドロシー・ウェインライト, Hepburn: Āru Doroshī Weinraito) was a female android that was commissioned by Timothy Wayneright. Introduced in Roger the Negotiator as Dorothy Soldano, daughter of rich scientist Miguel Soldano, she is later revealed to be an android constructed by him. Her actual 'father' was Timothy Wayneright, the man who commissioned her construction and biological father of the deceased human Dorothy Wayneright. To show her gratitude, and as a form of payment for Roger's help, she chose to occupy the mansion to assist with domestic work. However, as time passed, her responsibilities expanded to include aiding Norman Burg with maintenance on Big O and often accompanying Roger on negotiations and other assignments.

To retrieve Dorothy, Roger Smith the top negotiator of Paradigm City was hired to oversee the retrieval of the kidnapped 'daughter' of the wealthy scientist Miguel Soldano. The thugs try to escape with the briefcase of ransom money until Roger finds out that Dorothy is really an android, a replacement of her deceased human counterpart. After destroying the briefcase and returning home, Roger is visited by Dorothy, who requests that Roger protect her. Roger unwillingly takes Dorothy to her father's factory, only to see it in ruins as her father passes away in front of them. The thugs from before begin to shoot missiles at Roger and Dorothy, yet the two manage to defeat them with the use of a diversion. A giant Megadeus, known as Dorothy-1, roaming the city was seen attacking the bureau building, overpowering the military police. Roger summoned his Megadeus, the Big O, from underground and prevented Dorothy-1 from stealing printing plates from the bureau building.

After being freed, she followed Roger back to his home, where it was revealed that she was in fact an android constructed in the likeness of Timothy Wayneright’s deceased daughter. She quickly became a permanent presence in Roger’s mansion, showing loyalty to him while maintaining a detached and almost mechanical demeanor, marking the start of her role in his life. Dorothy began to adapt to her new circumstances within Roger’s home. She displayed her physical abilities when she assisted Roger during one of his early confrontations with a rogue megadeus, showing strength beyond that of a human and no hesitation in placing herself in harm’s way. Despite her outwardly cold manner, she demonstrated a subtle awareness of Roger’s needs, helping him manage the investigation that led to the revelation of Paradigm City’s lost memories. Dorothy’s activities in this period established her as not only a companion but also an asset in Roger’s dealings with both criminals and the mysterious machinery that dominated the city. Afterwards, Dorothy acted as both a grounding presence in Roger’s personal life and a capable participant in action sequences. She intervened during crises with calm precision, using her android durability to withstand hazards that would cripple or kill an ordinary human. In interactions with other characters, she often questioned human behavior, highlighting her struggle to reconcile her mechanical nature with the humanity she had been modeled after. Her presence deepened the sense of mystery surrounding the true nature of Paradigm City and the relationship between humans and the machines that resembled them.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Dorothy was seemingly a female human who stood under 5 feet (150 cm) tall where she had red hair, chalk-white skin and much more body weight than her slender appearance revealed. She had porcelain-like skin, striking red hair styled in a neat bob, and sharp, dark eyes that gave her an unblinking, doll-like expression. Her usual attire consisted of a black gothic-inspired dress with long sleeves, a high collar, and a white cravat, often paired with dark tights and shoes that reinforced her refined yet slightly somber look. It was revealed that she was named after the deceased daughter of Timothy Wayneright. Initially, she went by the name of Dorothy Soldano where it was said that she was the daughter of rich scientist Miguel Soldano.

While capable of normal human facial expressions, in film noir tradition she typically maintains a pouty contour and a mildly sarcastic personality. She was at one point described by Angel as being "perpetually foul-tempered". She possessed a dry and exceptionally sharp wit, often calling Roger a louse and on more than one occasion openly deriding other personality traits of his, such as his sense of fashion.

Her personality was marked by detachment and a seemingly emotionless demeanor. She rarely raised her voice or expressed overt feelings, speaking in a calm, measured tone regardless of the situation. However, beneath this surface, she demonstrated curiosity, occasional flashes of dry wit, and a persistent drive to protect Roger. She questioned the meaning of human emotions and memories, indicating an awareness of her own limitations as an android. Though she initially seemed cold, her actions consistently revealed loyalty, bravery, and a subtle affection for those close to her.

Being of a mechanical nature, Dorothy comes off mildly sardonic and cold. She is described as being poorly tempered and at times can be extremely sarcastic, despite her insistence that she was programmed without the ability to feel emotions. However, she is not totally lacking in emotions. While she tends to speak in monotone, there are times in which she has become visibly angry. Dorothy is also insecure about her robotic nature: for instance, she refuses to board an elevator with a strict weight capacity due to the fact that it reminds her that she is merely a "copy" of the original Dorothy Wayneright. Roger attempted to console her by having her board anyway; it caused the weight alarm to go off and make Dorothy leave.

She possessed a dry and exceptionally sharp wit, often calling Roger a louse and on more than one occasion openly deriding other personality traits of his, such as his sense of fashion. With regard to Roger, she demonstrated throughout the series that she enjoys getting under his skin in annoying ways, such as loudly playing Roger's piano to rouse him when he sleeps in. Offsetting her straightforward attitude is her general likability; she gets along rather well with virtually everyone, even those towards whom she harbors suspicion. From her conversation and behavior, it is evident that Dorothy has the capacity for human emotions. She has shown genuine fear on a number of occasions, and at one point revealed jealousy toward Angel's relationship with Roger and satisfaction from its failure to become romantic.

To show her gratitude, and as a form of payment for Roger's help, she decides to move in with him and help out Norman with the chores. Her role is that of helping Norman with chores around the Smith Mansion. Norman, no doubt, immediately sees a kinship and welcomes her with open arms into the Roger's home.

Powers and abilities

Though appearing human, Dorothy was in fact a highly complex female android. As an android, Dorothy’s physiology granted her enhanced physical abilities well beyond those of ordinary humans. She possessed great strength, able to lift heavy objects and engage in physical combat with opponents far larger than herself. Her mechanical body gave her high durability, allowing her to endure impacts, falls, and attacks without suffering the injuries a human would sustain. She also exhibited heightened reflexes and precision in movement, moving with calculated efficiency in every action. These abilities, while impressive, were balanced by her occasional stiffness and the constant reminder of her artificial origin. Her forehead housed an illuminated disc drive, which was tray loaded made to resemble a hair band. Despite being quite petite, she was extremely heavy; enough so that a grown man revealed to have difficulty so much as budging her. Dorothy was quite durable and much stronger than any human, able to punch down a brick wall with one blow or leap several dozen feet into the air. She has amazing balance, as seen during her moments of contemplation while standing precariously on the edge of Roger's rooftop balcony. She can run or bicycle at superhuman speed and does not require oxygen to operate. She possesses superhuman coordination, performing effortless gymnastic feats; at one point she even demonstrated the ability to steer a car with her foot while riding on its hood.

Alongside her, Soldano had also created a Megadeus named Dorothy-1. Dorothy and Dorothy-1 are considered sisters to each other by Soldano. Upon merging with the giant mecha, both became intertwined technologically with R. Dorothy serving as a power regulator circuit control unit of her sister unit. Dorothy-1 is equipped with a pair of claws on each arm from which long metallic tentacles and power drills extend. The tips of Dorothy-1's arm extensions contain hidden laser beams that are powerful enough to cut through reinforced metal.
