History
The Galactic Republic was an intergalactic government that was based on the world of Coruscant and consisted of numerous worlds in the galaxy far, far away.
As the Old Republic spread its influence across the stars, it came into contact with various other powers, one of them being the Zygerrian Slave Empire. Due to the fact that, at some point in its past, the Old Republic declared slavery illegal and expected other civilizations of the galaxy to comply, it took an aggressive stance against the Zygerrians. The Zygerrian Empire, which was built upon slavery, refused to comply, forcing both the Old Republic and the Jedi to intervene. After joining together, the Old Republic and Jedi Order sent their armies against the empire after the Zygerrians refused. The Old Republic ultimately came out victorious, driving the practice of slave trading into the underworld, dismantling the empire, and confining what was left of its government to Zygerria, the civilization's homeworld.
Republic Pathfinders were ordered to explore, help those they found, and, in what was a major part of their mission, establish a functioning communications network across the Outer Rim. While creating the network, Pathfinder teams often worked alongside comms teams in order to get in contact with the Republic at large while out in the Rim. However, the Pathfinders needed to establish the network one node at a time. While the Pathfinders knew the long-term effort would one day result in communications being as fast in the Rim as it was in the Core, Grint Rupar of Outer Rim Expedition Eight-Zero-Seven suspected the work would take generations. Nevertheless, Jedi Porter Engle dubbed it a noble effort that would change lives for the better. Members of the Jedi Order worked side-by-side with Pathfinders, traveling with them and helping in the Republic effort. One Pathfinder team, while working on charting the hyperlanes near Sullust, discovered the volcanic planet Tunguray and evacuated its people to safety on Coruscant.
Meanwhile on Coruscant, Greylark feared Mollo was making a play at a solo-chancellery ahead of the campaign season. In reality, Mollo simply wanted to be the one to bring peace to the system because of his own past surrounded by war. Deep down, Greylark did trust in her fellow Chancellor, but sent her controversial son Axel Greylark to represent her office in the peace proceedings and report back to her. Axel's own dealings with the Path of the Open Hand nearly led to the destruction of the peace process after cult leader Elecia Zeveron demanded he bring her a toxin developed on Eiram. Amid the successful Wedding of Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A'lbaran officiated by Mollo, Axel's desperation to prevent Zeveron from securing the toxin led to him destroying the deflector shields around Eiram's capital of Erasmus. After Axel's arrest, the royals agreeing to destroy the toxin, and the formal beginning of the peace process, Mollo reminded his fellow Chancellor to trust him, to which Greylark admitted she did and she had simply wanted to trust her son as well.
Though powerful, it had become bloated with corruption and scandals during this time with senators as well as bureaucrats engaging in such activities. This led to issues being debated at the Galactic Senate but taking lengthy period of time with little resolution. In fact, it was deemed that real change was impossible during this time with illegal activities flourishing in the Republic during this time.
By this point, the Republic was an aging, bureaucratic entity rife with political stagnation and quiet decay. The narrative began with the greedy Trade Federation establishing a military blockade around the peaceful world of Naboo, a drastic measure taken in retaliation against recent legislation taxing outer-rim trade routes. Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, a well-meaning but ineffectual leader, dispatched two Jedi Knights, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, to resolve the matter peacefully. Their mission failed spectacularly when the Federation, secretly manipulated by the shadowy Darth Sidious, attempted to execute the Jedi and launched a full-scale invasion of the planet, capturing the young Queen Amidala. The Jedi managed to free the Queen and her entourage, fleeing the occupied world in a damaged starship. After an emergency stop on the desert planet Tatooine, where they discovered the prodigious young slave Anakin Skywalker, they successfully reached the Republic capital world of Coruscant. There, they encountered a Galactic Senate drowning in political maneuvering and procedural gridlock, utterly incapable of providing swift aid to the besieged Naboo. Frustrated by the endless debates and the Chancellor's inability to act decisively, Queen Amidala was subtly manipulated by her own Senator, the seemingly benevolent Palpatine, into calling for a 'vote of no confidence' against Chancellor Valorum. This maneuver succeeded, removing Valorum from power and allowing for Palpatine’s nomination and eventual election as the new Supreme Chancellor, a democratic rise to power that ultimately secured the Republic’s long-term fate while simultaneously allowing the heroes to return to Naboo and lead a successful liberation effort against the Trade Federation forces.
Under the direction of Sifo-Dyas, the cloners of Kamino were contacted with creating an entire line of Clone Troopers bred from the DNA of the bounty hunter Jango Fett. These clones were bred in secret and were used to establish the Grand Army of the Republic. The Grand Army was formally deployed at the outbreak of hostilities with the Droid Armies of the newly formed Confederacy of Independent Systems that formed in opposition to the Republic. With the Jedi in the lead, the Grand Army was deployed to strike the Separatist forces on Geonosis leading to the outbreak of the devastating Clone Wars.
At the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Chancellor Palpatine made the Declaration of the New Order and re-ordered the Republic into the Galactic Empire. In opposition to the Empire, various worlds formed resistance groups that formed into the Rebel Alliance that in time took part in the Galactic Civil War. This culminated in the death of Emperor Palpatine with the Rebel Alliance seeking a return of the republic with them forming the New Republic.
Overview
In appearance, the Galactic Republic was a sprawling, decentralized democracy that presided over thousands of star systems across the galaxy. Functionally, it was a democratic, decentralized governing body that represented thousands of member star systems, all governed by the rule of law. The vast, multi-century-old interstellar union that encompassed countless diverse worlds and species under a common democratic framework. It was a society largely founded upon principles of peaceful coexistence, negotiation, and a shared commitment to the rule of law. The government functioned as a representative democracy where member systems had a voice, striving to balance the interests of core, sophisticated planets with those on the rugged outer rim. Its foundational ethos was maintaining peace across the galaxy. The Republic projected an image of a civilized, stable, and ethically minded society that had long moved past overt warfare, favoring dialogue and diplomacy as primary means of governance. It was a well-established society with robust trade agreements and governmental processes that had, for generations, maintained order and prosperity through consensus rather than coercion.
The Office of the Chancellor maintained both the Chancellery Secretariat beneath the Senate chambers of the Galactic Senate Building and the Chancellor's office in the Senate Office Building.
It was headed by a body known as the Galactic Senate that represented the various member worlds of the Republic.
The Judicial Department served as the executive and judiciary department that oversaw law enforcement and judiciary affairs for the Galactic Republic. It was based at the Judicial Arcology on the planet Coruscant and oversaw the Republic courts, the Judicial Forces, and the Republic Office of Criminal Investigations.
One group within the Republic were the Senate Guards who for centuries had kept the galaxy's legislators from harm as they operated on Coruscant. The best and bravest of the guard could receive an invitation to become members of the elite Senate Commandos that carried secret government missions.
