Biography
The First Firmament
In the beginning, there was only one universe: the First Firmament. Loneliness led it into making life, resulting in the birth of several celestial beings. The dark ones, who the Firmament named "Aspirants," were industrious in their worship of it, seeking its approval whenever they created life on their own. But the multicolored ones, who later became known as "Celestials," wanted their creations to evolve and for the universe to evolve with them, and thus know growth, change, and mortality. This divergence of ideas ushered in a war that ended with the First Firmament being shattered into pieces by the weapons of the multicolored rebels, forcing it to flee in terror to the farthest edges of being with the remaining Aspirants. Hundreds of new universes were born from the First Firmament's pure substance, forming a new, collective being who was the Second Cosmos and first Multiverse. (Ultimates 2 v2 #6)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, the First Firmament was an immense, omnipresent cosmic entity that represented the original singular universe before the birth of the Multiverse. Its form was vast and abstract, spanning all of existence with no fixed boundaries. When it chose to manifest visually, it appeared as a regal and imposing figure composed of shimmering silvery-blue celestial matter, adorned with constellations and starlight embedded within its very being. Its “face,” when shown, bore the semblance of an emotionless, divine mask—smooth, expressionless, and luminous—floating above a swirling expanse of cosmic void. This form was both awe-inspiring and unnerving, for it bore the aesthetic of perfection and infinite stillness. The First Firmament projected its image from beyond the edge of reality, watching over the entirety of existence with an omniscient presence that seemed carved out of the early, unfractured order of creation itself. Its image exuded the impression of ancient royalty, untouched by entropy, chaos, or time. (Ultimates 2 v1 #6)
Powers and abilities
The First Firmament was composed not of matter or energy as understood by mortal science, but of proto-reality—a primordial essence that predated all known laws of physics, existence, or cosmic structure. It was the embodiment of Order and Unity, and from its substance it created the Aspirants, subservient beings formed in its image, whose purpose was to worship and enact its will. Eventually, a faction of its creations—the rebellious Celestials—rose up and ignited a war that tore the First Cosmos apart. In that shattering, the First Firmament was wounded and cast into exile, its perfect singular existence split into the multitude of universes that would form the Second Cosmos and subsequent multiversal generations. Despite this, fragments of the First Firmament survived across time and space, eventually reconstituting itself and re-emerging in a later era to confront Eternity and reclaim dominion over the fractured multiverse. Its essence was fundamentally hostile to evolution and diversity, and its return marked a desperate attempt to undo creation and restore the original oneness it once imposed. (Ultimates 2 v1 #6)
The First Firmament is virtually omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. Although it was greatly weakened when it was shattered. (Ultimates 2 v2 #6)
